A precision RTD measurement in an electrically noisy environment depends on more than the converter: sensor wiring, lead resistance, protection parts, filtering, PCB layout, calibration, and the EMC test setup all affect the result. An Analog Devices example using an LTC2983 and a shielded 3-wire PT1000 reports limited temperature fluctuation during several immunity tests, but those results apply to its described circuit and test conditions—not to every RTD product or installation.

Why RTD accuracy is an EMC design problem

An RTD measures temperature through a change in electrical resistance. That makes it sensitive to unwanted resistance in the measurement path: sensor-lead resistance, protection components, and circuit connections can all appear as part of the sensor signal unless the topology accounts for them. Electromagnetic interference adds another challenge by coupling into sensor wiring or the analog input.

Analog Devices’ example uses an LTC2983 measurement front end (AFE) with a shielded Class B 3-wire PT1000 connected to adjacent input channels. The article reports that the LTC2983 system provides 0.1°C accuracy and 0.001°C resolution, and discusses RTD measurement from −200°C to +800°C. These are claims attributed to the device and described measurement system, not independent measurements of a reader’s design. Check the current LTC2983 product information and documentation, then validate the complete implementation against its requirements.

Choose a wiring topology that fits the accuracy and installation

Wiring choice is a tradeoff among lead-resistance compensation, cable burden, and implementation complexity.

Topology Lead-resistance behavior Tradeoff
2-wire Lead resistance adds to the measured resistance and can create temperature error. Simplest wiring, but the lead contribution must be acceptable or otherwise addressed.
3-wire Can cancel lead resistance using matched current sources; the cancellation depends on the lead resistances being equal, as noted in the Analog Devices example. Balances compensation with fewer conductors than a 4-wire connection; matching and circuit configuration matter.
4-wire (Kelvin) Separate high-impedance sense leads measure across the RTD without carrying excitation current. In the described arrangement, this makes the protection-resistance contribution to the sense path negligible and can remove balanced or unbalanced lead-resistance effects. Requires additional conductors and implementation effort, which can increase cable and installation cost.

A 4-wire arrangement is not a universal cure for every protection-related error: its benefit depends on the actual circuit topology and how the protection components connect. Analog Devices’ CN0383 circuit note provides further circuit-specific 2-, 3-, and 4-wire implementation context. It is a related design, not the LTC2983 example.

How the LTC2983 example protects and filters its inputs

In the Analog Devices configuration, a shielded sensor cable of about 10 m connects the 3-wire PT1000 to adjacent LTC2983 channels. The described input protection uses an SMAJ5.0A TVS diode and 100 Ω current-limiting resistors. The resistors, together with capacitors downstream, form low-pass input filters intended to limit unwanted high-frequency energy reaching the measurement inputs.

The article gives −3 dB bandwidths of 7.9 kHz in differential mode and 1.6 MHz in common mode for that filter configuration. These values describe the example, not recommended defaults: changing resistor or capacitor values can affect both interference rejection and measurement behavior. Protection and filtering must be assessed together with the sensor topology, expected signal, component tolerances, and applicable test requirements.

What immunity the example reports—and what it does not prove

Analog Devices reports the following maximum temperature fluctuations for its described circuit and test setup. The source extract does not expose the article’s publication year, so the figures below should be read as source-reported results rather than a current certification or guarantee.

Test Reported test level and range Maximum reported temperature fluctuation
Radiated susceptibility 10 V/m across 80 MHz to about 1 GHz and 1.4 GHz to about 2 GHz <0.5°C
Conducted susceptibility 10 V across 0.15 MHz to about 80 MHz <0.2°C
ESD ±8 kV conducted and ±15 kV air <0.15°C
EFT ±4 kV at 5 kHz <0.15°C
Surge ±4 kV, 1.2/50 (8/20) μs <0.2°C

These figures do not establish that a different cable, enclosure, PCB, sensor, installation, or product will pass the same tests. Nor do they constitute a blanket EMC certification. Applicable immunity limits and acceptance criteria depend on the product and its intended environment; test the complete system against the requirements that apply to it.

Other implementations show why results are design-specific

Texas Instruments’ December 2025 application note, SDAA150, covers EMC design and testing for RTD and thermocouple measurement systems using the ADS124S08. Its summary reports calibrated RTD system error below ±0.06°C over −200°C to +850°C and says its described configurations passed relevant IEC 61000-4 testing. Those results belong to TI’s configurations, not the Analog Devices LTC2983 circuit.

Other TI reference designs illustrate different use cases rather than interchangeable performance claims. The TIDA-00165 is a separate 2-wire loop-powered RTD transmitter example with protection for EFT, ESD, and surge requirements. TI’s TIDA-00095 page reports less than 0.17°C maximum measured error over −200°C to 850°C for that reference design; that figure is not a result for TIDA-00165 or the LTC2983 example.

How to apply the example to your own design

  1. Set the measurement requirements. Define the RTD type and class, temperature range, acceptable total error, cable length, shielding, and the EMC environment or standards that apply.
  2. Select the wiring topology. Estimate lead-resistance error for 2-wire wiring; for 3-wire, determine whether the circuit’s lead-resistance cancellation assumptions are met; for 4-wire, weigh the extra conductors and installation burden against the need to separate excitation and sense paths.
  3. Check the complete measurement chain. Confirm the AFE’s excitation and current configuration, input range, reference behavior, calibration needs, and sensor compatibility. ADC resolution alone does not establish system accuracy.
  4. Design protection and filtering together. Choose components for the expected interference and protection requirements, then evaluate how their resistance, tolerances, and filter bandwidth affect the RTD measurement.
  5. Review the physical implementation. Account for sensor wiring and shielding, connector and cable details, PCB layout, and the installation. A circuit schematic alone cannot establish system-level EMC performance.
  6. Validate the assembled system. Calibrate as needed and test the complete configuration under applicable EMC conditions while monitoring temperature error or fluctuation against the product’s acceptance limits.

For a prototype based on a different Analog Devices circuit, CN0383 names the EVAL-AD7124-4SDZ or EVAL-AD7124-8SDZ evaluation board and an SDP system demonstration platform for its own implementation. These are not evaluation boards for the LTC2983 example.
