EmuDeck controller problems can come from two different places: the Steam Input layout applied to a game, or the emulator’s own button bindings. Check the Steam layout first, then edit the emulator’s input settings if its controls are still wrong. Automatic mapping is emulator-specific: EmuDeck documents a controller-add workflow for Cemu, but not one universal auto-map feature for every emulator.
First identify which control layer is wrong
EmuDeck uses Steam Input as a standardized control layer across emulators, but Steam Input and an emulator’s own bindings are separate settings. A wrong Steam layout can make buttons unavailable or behave unexpectedly before the emulator’s mappings are involved. If the Steam layout is appropriate but buttons are still assigned incorrectly inside a game, check the emulator’s input configuration.
- Buttons unavailable or unexpected across the game: check the Steam Input layout.
- Buttons wrong inside the emulator despite a suitable Steam layout: check the emulator’s input bindings.
- External controller, gyro, or duplicate input: check Steam Input and controller order as well as emulator bindings.
Choose the Steam Input layout in Game Mode
For a game with an EmuDeck Steam Input profile, select the appropriate profile from that game’s Controller screen in Game Mode. EmuDeck says its profiles may include emulator hotkeys as well as ordinary gamepad controls, so a profile can be useful even when you mainly want the standard buttons.
To choose or change the layout, open the affected game’s Controller screen, select the current layout shown at the top, and choose an available profile. If the emulator has no specific EmuDeck profile, EmuDeck recommends Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad. The available layouts and exact labels may vary as the software changes.

Correct bindings in the emulator
If the Steam layout is suitable but the emulator’s buttons do not match your controller, open that emulator’s input configuration and assign the controls there. Some emulators let you save a separate profile, which can preserve your changes without overwriting EmuDeck’s defaults.
On Steam Deck in Desktop Mode, hold the Start button for three seconds to switch from desktop controls to gamepad controls before navigating emulator menus. Then open the emulator’s input settings and adjust the bindings you need.

Automatic mapping: the documented Cemu workflow
EmuDeck’s Cemu guide describes a specific way to add and map a controller. It should not be treated as a universal auto-map button for every emulator.
- Open Cemu’s input settings.
- Add a controller, then select SDLController as the API and choose the connected controller.
- Click Add, then save the profile with a distinctive name.
For other emulators, use their own input settings and documentation; the Cemu steps do not establish that other emulators offer the same options.

Troubleshoot an external controller
Check Steam Input and native features
Steam Input helps EmuDeck standardize Steam Deck controls, but it may not expose some external controllers’ native features, including gyro. For an affected game, open its Controller screen, open the gear menu, and disable Steam Input. EmuDeck notes that you may need to restart the game for the change to take effect.
Check which controller is Player 1
With multiple external controllers, rearrange controller order in the Quick Access menu. EmuDeck says order can affect which device the game identifies as Player 1.

Address duplicate input on the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G
For double inputs with the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller, EmuDeck recommends trying Steam Input disabled for the affected game. This is a troubleshooting step, not a general fix for incorrect mappings or a claim that the controller is incompatible.

If a changed input setting has made controls unusable, EmuDeck says you can restore its defaults from the Manage Emulators page in the EmuDeck application. On Windows, its known-issues guidance also recommends selecting the emulator and choosing Reset configuration. A reset removes the current configuration; note any custom profile choices you want to recreate before using it.

Try the narrower fix first: correct the Steam Input layout or the emulator’s bindings, as appropriate. Reset the emulator configuration only if those checks do not resolve the problem.
