To control VMware services on a Windows PC, first check which services your installed VMware product actually uses, then manage only those services through Windows Services. You can set a service to start manually or start and stop it on demand, but service names and dependencies vary by release. Changing them can prevent virtual machines or networking features from working.
What “override VMware services” means
Here, “override” means changing how VMware host services start and stop in Windows—not changing a setting inside a virtual machine. VMware products may install background services for tasks such as authorization, DHCP, and NAT. The exact set depends on the product and release. Broadcom notes in its Windows service troubleshooting article that “Depending on the VMware product, some services might not be there on your Windows host.”
A Petri guide published January 8, 2009, and reported as updated September 24, 2024, describes manual service control for older VMware Server and Workstation examples. Its service names and commands are legacy guidance, not a universal recipe for current installations.
Inspect the VMware services installed on your PC
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter to open the Services console. - Review the list for services whose names identify VMware. Depending on the installed product, examples may include VMware Authorization, DHCP, or NAT services; older guides also name VMware Agent and Virtual Mount Manager.
- Open a service’s properties to check its display name, service name, current status, and startup type. Record the current setting before changing it.
- Identify your VMware product and version, then consult its current vendor guidance before changing a service. Do not assume a service name or dependency from another release applies to yours.
Choose between default startup and manual control

The available sources do not establish one recommended startup setting for every current VMware installation. Avoid disabling or changing every service as a blanket performance measure; no independent performance measurement supports a general claim that doing so produces a meaningful improvement.

Change a service’s startup behavior or control it on demand
Use the Services console for the clearest view of the service name and startup type. If you use commands, run Command Prompt as an administrator and substitute the exact service name shown for your installation. Petri’s older guide uses sc config to change startup behavior and sc start or sc stop to control selected services, but its examples should not be copied blindly to a different product or version.
- In Services, right-click the verified VMware service and select Properties.
- To make it start only when requested, select Manual in Startup type, then select Apply. Do not select Disabled unless current product guidance specifically calls for it.
- To start or stop it immediately, use the service’s context menu in Services. Windows may prevent stopping a service that is required by another running component.
- Launch VMware and test the virtual machines and features you use. If something fails, restore the startup type you recorded and start the service again.
If VMware cannot power on a virtual machine
A startup preference is different from a service failure. If Workstation reports that VMware Authorization Service is not running while powering on a VM, Broadcom’s troubleshooting article for specified older Workstation Pro and Player versions directs users to check and start that service. That repair case is version-specific; follow guidance for your installed release rather than treating it as a fix for every current installation.

For other failures, check the exact error and identify which service the affected feature requires. Restore the original startup setting and start the relevant service before changing additional services. If the service is missing or will not start, use support instructions for the installed product and version.
