To make room on an Xbox, first uninstall games or apps you no longer use. If you want to keep your games, move some to a USB external drive or add an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card. The key difference: extra storage does not always mean a game can be played directly from that drive, so check the individual game before moving it.
Free space without buying anything
Start by reviewing installed games and apps, then uninstall anything you no longer need. Xbox lists uninstalling games as one way to gain storage space. This is the simplest option if you are finished with a title or can download it again later.
On your console, open its storage-management area and review installed content. Menu labels can vary with console software updates, so follow the current labels shown on your Xbox rather than relying on an old button-by-button path. Xbox Support’s Manage storage page covers the topic, though its current detailed instructions may not be accessible on every device.
Keep games on a USB external drive
A compatible USB external drive can hold games and help free space on the console’s internal drive. This is useful if you want to keep titles installed rather than remove and download them again. Xbox Wire describes USB storage as a way to carry games between consoles, but storage location and playability are separate questions.

Some games may need to be moved to the console’s internal storage or a Series X|S Storage Expansion Card before you can play them. Behavior can depend on the specific title, so check that game’s current console information before treating a USB drive as a place to play it directly. Xbox’s older 2020 guidance specifically mentions playing Xbox One and earlier titles from an external USB drive; it should not be read as a universal compatibility guarantee for every current drive or game. Xbox Wire’s storage guidance also quotes Xbox Director of Program Management Jason Ronald on connecting an existing USB 3.1 drive, but verify your drive’s compatibility before relying on that older advice.
Add storage at the console’s custom SSD performance
For additional game storage with the performance of the Xbox custom SSD, Xbox identifies its dedicated Series X|S Storage Expansion Card. It connects through the console’s expansion port and is designed to add game storage at the same performance level as the internal custom SSD. Xbox says consoles come with either a 512 GB or 1 TB internal drive; those are advertised drive configurations, not guarantees that the full stated capacity is available for game installs. Xbox Support lists uninstalling games, attaching an external hard drive, and adding a Series X|S Storage Expansion Card among the ways to gain space.
