Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription, select Manage, then use the controls shown for its current status. Turning recurring billing off stops future automatic charges but does not end access immediately; the subscription remains active until the expiry date displayed in your account.
Find the subscription and check its billing status
- Open Services & subscriptions.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy Game Pass. If you have more than one Microsoft account, check the purchasing account; a subscription may not appear under a different one.
- Find the subscription and select Manage.
- Read the status and date shown on the page before making a change. Microsoft says a renewal date or upcoming-charge notice indicates recurring billing is on. A displayed expiry date or a Turn on recurring billing control indicates it is already off and the subscription is set to expire.
Use the date and status on your own subscription page as the guide. Available controls can differ by account state.
Turn recurring billing off
On the subscription’s Manage page, review the details and choose the recurring-billing option if it is offered. Follow the confirmation flow and read what it says will happen. Microsoft’s guidance says you will not be billed in the future after recurring billing is turned off, while access continues until the expiry date shown for the subscription. Microsoft’s recurring-billing instructions describe this general account process.
If the page already offers Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is off; you do not need to turn it off again. The subscription is set to expire on its displayed date.

Turn recurring billing back on or renew
Find Game Pass under Services & subscriptions, select Manage, then choose Turn on recurring billing if that option appears. Depending on the account state, Microsoft may instead show a Renew or Resubscribe link; Microsoft says either can renew the subscription and enable recurring billing. Prepaid subscriptions, expired subscriptions, or products that are no longer available may show different options.
Change the payment method
For a subscription with recurring billing, go to Services & subscriptions > Manage > Change how you pay. Select an available payment method or add one if the page offers that choice. Microsoft’s payment-method guidance says the option may be absent when recurring billing is off and the subscription is already paid through its expiry date. Prepaid subscriptions do not support changing the payment method.

Change the plan or billing recurrence
Microsoft’s support guidance says Xbox Live and Game Pass subscriptions can be switched. Where the account offers it, use Services & subscriptions > Manage > Change > Switch, then select an available recurrence. If the option does not appear, Microsoft advises checking whether recurring billing is on. Which plans and recurrence choices are available can depend on the account and region; use the choices and terms displayed on your page rather than assuming a particular tier, price, or billing period is offered.
Understand recurring and prepaid subscriptions

Microsoft advises turning off recurring billing on the existing subscription before using a prepaid subscription code when that subscription expires. A code is optional; it is not required to stop renewal, change a payment method, or manage billing. Check the exact plan, region, duration, and redemption terms before buying a code.

Cancel an Xbox subscription or troubleshoot a missing option
Microsoft’s general cancellation guidance says to sign in with the purchasing account, locate the subscription under Services & subscriptions, and follow the cancellation steps shown there. It links to separate Xbox-specific cancellation information, so the general article should not be treated as confirmation of every Xbox screen or policy. A Turn on recurring billing control means the subscription is already set to expire and will not automatically charge after the date displayed.
- Subscription not listed: Check that you are signed in with the Microsoft account used to purchase it.
- No payment-change option: Recurring billing may be off, or the subscription may be prepaid. Review its status and expiry date.
- No plan-switch option: The option may not be available for the current account state; Microsoft says to check that recurring billing is on.
- Unsure whether it will charge again: Look for a renewal date or upcoming-charge notice versus an expiry date or Turn on recurring billing control.
