To make room for another Game Pass install, first uninstall games you no longer use or move an installed game to another drive where the Xbox app or console supports it. Add storage only if library management is not enough. A drive that can store a game is not necessarily able to run it—especially for Xbox Series X|S optimized titles.
Manage your installed games before adding storage
Start with the games taking up space and decide which you still want installed. Use the platform’s game-management controls to uninstall a title, or move it when the relevant option is available. This avoids buying a drive simply to keep games installed that you no longer play.
On Xbox consoles, use the current My games & apps and Storage controls to review installations and storage locations. Menu wording and paths can vary with the console software version, so follow the options displayed on your system rather than relying on a fixed button sequence.
On Windows, the Xbox app’s game-management controls are the documented route for moving an installed game. Microsoft announced moving and repairing games through the app’s Manage option in a November 2021 Insider feature announcement; current screens may differ by app version. Xbox Wire’s 2021 announcement describes the feature, and Dovetail Games’ Xbox app guide outlines a Manage workflow.

Move or choose an install location on Windows
Move a game that is already installed
- Open the Xbox app and select the game in your library.
- Open the game’s Manage controls and look for the option to move the installation. The exact label and availability can vary by app build and game.
- Select a destination drive offered by the app and confirm the move. If no move option appears, use the app’s available install-management controls or consult the game publisher’s support instructions.
Choose a drive for a new install
When installing a game, check the destination drive shown by the Xbox app and change it if the app offers another suitable location. Microsoft Community guidance discusses selecting a different drive for new PC installs and moving existing games through Manage Installs; treat it as community guidance, not a guarantee that every PC setup exposes identical choices. Use external storage on an Xbox console carefully
An external USB drive can expand the space available for a game library, but storage and playback are separate capabilities. Some games can be played from external storage, while others—particularly certain Series X|S optimized titles—require the console’s internal storage or supported expansion storage to run. Compatibility depends on the game and console generation; do not assume that every USB drive can play every installed title.

For Series X|S optimized play, check the current Xbox-supported storage requirements before buying. A compatible expansion card is the specific external-storage route for titles that require supported expansion storage; otherwise, use the console’s internal storage. A general external drive may still be useful for holding games that need to be moved back to supported storage before play. Before purchasing a drive, compare its compatibility with your console or PC, whether it can run the games you care about or only store them, its usable capacity, connection type, and price. For PC, also check that the Xbox app offers the intended destination on your particular setup. The available guidance does not establish a universal model-by-model compatibility list or a single best drive for every player.

Game files and local data are not the same thing. Microsoft’s Xbox developer documentation says game-specific local storage may be console-specific and that associated local storage is removed when a title is uninstalled. Do not assume that every title or situation has an available cloud save; check the game and account circumstances before relying on a save being preserved. If an install or move fails
- Check that the selected drive has enough free space and is available to the device.
- Reopen the Xbox app or console storage controls and confirm the game’s installation status and destination.
- If a console install cannot be pushed to a device, consult Microsoft Support’s troubleshooting page.
- For a game-specific problem, use the publisher’s support guidance as well as Xbox’s own controls; app options can differ by game and version.
