You can delete a game and download it again later, archive PS5 game files on a USB drive, add a compatible internal M.2 SSD to keep more PS5 games ready to launch, or stream an eligible catalog title if your plan and connection support it. Saved data is separate from installed game files.
Check what is taking up space
- Open Settings > Storage to see available space.
- Choose Console Storage > Games and Apps to review installed games and their data.
- If a game has a Customize option, check whether it lets you remove add-ons or completed portions you no longer need. This option is not available for every game.
Removing game files is different from removing saved data. Before deleting anything, identify whether you are managing the installed game or its save files.
Delete a game and download it again later
Deleting a downloaded game frees console storage without removing your purchase entitlement. Sony says purchased games can be downloaded again from your Game Library. The trade-off is the time and bandwidth needed to download and install the game again when you want to play it: Sony’s PS5 storage guide.
This is the simplest no-hardware option if you are not playing a game now and are comfortable reinstalling it later. It does not keep the game ready to launch offline from another storage location.

Use USB extended storage to archive PS5 games
A compatible USB extended-storage drive can hold PS5 game data for later, and compatible PS4 games can be played directly from the drive. A PS5 game stored on USB cannot launch from there: move its game data back to console storage or M.2 storage before playing. Sony’s Canada USB storage overview lists supported external-drive capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB; confirm current regional guidance and compatibility before choosing a drive.
USB storage is useful when you want to avoid downloading a large game again but can accept a transfer before play. It is an archive, not an expansion of the space from which PS5 games launch.

Add internal M.2 storage to keep more PS5 games launchable
A compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD is the expansion option that lets you download, copy, and launch PS5 games directly. Sony’s current US guidance specifies the following checks:
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe, Key M. M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
- Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Supported lengths: 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm.
- Maximum width: 25 mm, including the cooling structure.
- Maximum thickness: 11.25 mm, subject to Sony’s specified above- and below-board limits.
- Speed: Sony recommends sequential read speeds of 5,500 MB/s or faster.
- Cooling: Effective heat dissipation is required. A drive may have a built-in heatsink or need a separate cooling structure.
These specifications come from Sony’s US M.2 SSD guide. A generic “M.2” label is not enough to confirm compatibility. Check the drive’s exact dimensions, cooling arrangement, and manufacturer compatibility information. Sony cautions that it cannot guarantee every third-party drive meeting the specifications will work, and that not every game necessarily performs exactly as it does on the internal SSD—even if the M.2 drive exceeds the recommended read speed.

Before installing an M.2 SSD
- Make sure the PS5 has the latest system software before installation.
- Use a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver. The installation steps vary by PS5 model group, so follow the instructions for your console in Sony’s M.2 guide.
- Back up anything already stored on the SSD. The first-time format erases all data on that M.2 drive.
An M.2 SSD suits players who want more PS5 games installed and launchable without first moving them off a USB drive. Unlike deleting and reinstalling, it requires a separately purchased drive and installation; unlike USB archiving, it does not require transferring a PS5 game back before play.
Keep saved data separate from game installations
PlayStation Plus cloud storage holds game saved data, not installed RPG files. It can help sync or transfer supported saves, but it will not free space used by a game’s installation. Cloud saves require an active PlayStation Plus membership. Sony Interactive Entertainment / PlayStation Support states: “You can save up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data.” The support page does not state a publication year: PlayStation Plus cloud storage support.

Stream an eligible catalog game instead of installing it
Depending on your region, membership plan, and the game’s current eligibility, a PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title may be available to download or stream. Check the game’s live listing and your plan rather than assuming every RPG can be streamed. Sony lists a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps for streaming; supported 1080p streaming requires at least 15 Mbps. Resolution may drop if the connection falls below that level. Streaming is also incompatible with some features, including Remote Play, Share Play or Share Screen, and broadcasting. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus Game Catalog page.
Streaming can let you try an eligible game without installing its full local game files, but it depends on title, plan, region, and network support. It is not a way to store a downloaded PS5 game on an external drive.

For a game you are not playing, deletion is the straightforward option if reinstalling later is acceptable. Use USB when you want to keep PS5 game files but can transfer them before play. Choose a compatible M.2 SSD when the goal is to keep more PS5 games launchable from storage, and consider streaming only when the title and your membership support it.
