To reduce how your chats are used, use ChatGPT’s Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone switch, and choose Temporary Chat when you also want a conversation kept out of history. Meta’s controls are less uniform: Meta says Incognito Chat is available in WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, but its current announcement does not establish one settings path for every Meta AI surface. Neither service’s privacy controls should be treated as a single “private” switch: model improvement, chat history, memory, personalization and retention are separate.

Turn off ChatGPT model improvement
- In your signed-in personal ChatGPT account, open Settings.
- Select Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI says the setting syncs across web and mobile. It changes the use of conversations to improve ChatGPT; it does not delete existing chats or remove them from your history. See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.
Use Temporary Chat when you do not want a conversation in history
Start a Temporary Chat for a conversation that should not appear in chat history, create memories or be used to improve models. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for safety for up to 30 days, so Temporary Chat does not mean immediate erasure or zero retention. If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows your account’s normal settings. OpenAI explains consumer data handling here.
Remove ChatGPT chats and saved memories separately
Deleting a conversation and deleting a saved memory are different actions. If your aim is to remove information used for personalization, review memory settings and remove the relevant saved memory; deleting only the conversation does not necessarily remove it. If you want to remove a conversation, use the chat’s deletion control. OpenAI’s Privacy Center in ChatGPT describes privacy and account controls.

If you use a managed work or school workspace, an administrator may control available privacy settings and retention. OpenAI also says export and deletion options are not uniformly available in managed workspaces. Check your workspace policy or ask its administrator.
What Meta AI Incognito Chat does—and what is established
In its May 13, 2026 announcement, Meta said Incognito Chat was available on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, describing it as private, temporary and disappearing by default. Meta’s wording was: “When you start an Incognito Chat with Meta AI on WhatsApp, you’re creating a private, temporary conversation that only you can see.” This is Meta’s product description, not an independent guarantee about privacy or a claim that all Meta AI conversations work this way. The announcement does not establish a current, unified menu path across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and the standalone app, or give an exhaustive region-by-region rollout map. Do not assume the feature or controls are identical across those services.
Meta activity settings are not an AI-chat training switch
Meta’s June 9, 2026 announcement says activity that businesses share with Meta can be used to personalize content, including AI responses. It identifies Your activity off Meta technologies and Activity from other businesses as related settings. These settings concern activity received from businesses; they are not equivalent to disabling use of a particular AI prompt for model training. Deleting Meta AI activity
Meta’s 2023 explainer documented the command /reset-ai for deleting AI messages. Because that instruction predates Meta’s 2026 Incognito Chat announcement and does not establish a universal current method across Meta AI products, check the current in-app help or controls before relying on it. Choose the control that matches your goal
- Stop new personal ChatGPT conversations from improving models: turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- Keep a ChatGPT conversation out of history and memory: use Temporary Chat, while accounting for the documented safety retention period.
- Remove ChatGPT personalization data: review saved memories separately from chat deletion.
- Use Meta’s disappearing-chat mode: look for Incognito Chat in WhatsApp or the Meta AI app if it is available to your account; Meta’s description applies to those named surfaces.
- Limit business-shared activity used for Meta personalization: review Meta’s activity settings, understanding that they are not a control for AI prompt training.
