Before a company reports earnings, treat the announcement as a discrete event-risk window: confirm when the report and call happen, total your direct and correlated exposure, estimate a plausible adverse price gap, and reduce or hedge the position until the potential loss fits your portfolio’s limit. Decide in advance whether you will exit, hold, or hedge. A stop order is not a guaranteed exit price: the SEC warns that once triggered, it becomes a market order and may execute at a price significantly different from the stop.
Why can earnings change your portfolio risk overnight?
An earnings report can cause a stock to reprice abruptly when investors compare the company’s results and outlook with expectations. If the announcement comes after the close or before the market opens, the next available trading price may be far from the prior close. A position sized around an ordinary daily move may therefore be too large for an earnings gap.
The event can affect more than the company’s shares. A report may change expectations for an industry, a supplier, a customer, or a sector ETF. Several holdings that appear diversified by ticker can still depend on the same business trend. The SEC and FINRA materials emphasize diversification and the risk of investing money you cannot afford to lose; neither principle eliminates the possibility of a concentrated loss around an event.

What should you check before deciding what to do?
Start by fixing the event details and the complete exposure picture. Do this before choosing a trade adjustment, not after the announcement has begun moving prices.
- Confirm the report date and timing. Check the company’s official investor-relations announcement for whether results are expected before the opening bell or after the close. Check the conference-call time separately; the call may add information after the release.
- List every position affected. Include shares, options, sector funds, and holdings in customers, suppliers, or close competitors that could react to the same news. Record the number of shares or contracts, current position value, and any options’ strike and expiration.
- Identify the exposure you can actually lose. Note whether the position is in a taxable account, uses margin, or includes short options. A hedge that appears simple in isolation can leave assignment, cash, or collateral obligations elsewhere in the account.
- Write down the investment thesis. Identify the operating results or guidance that matter to it: for example, revenue, margins, cash flow, balance-sheet condition, or management’s outlook. This helps separate a change in the thesis from a dramatic but incomplete first price reaction.
- Set your event-loss limit. Decide the maximum dollar loss you are willing to accept from the event across the affected portfolio—not just the loss on the one ticker you are focused on.
How do you size a position for an earnings gap?
Work backward from the dollar loss your portfolio can tolerate, then estimate the number of shares that would keep a plausible adverse gap within that budget. This is a planning estimate, not a prediction of the next price or a guarantee that the loss will stop at the chosen amount.
Loss budget = portfolio value × maximum event-loss percentage.

For a purely illustrative calculation, suppose a portfolio is worth $50,000 and its owner chooses a 0.5% event-loss budget. That produces a $250 budget. If the owner models an adverse gap of $5 per share, the simple calculation gives 50 shares ($250 ÷ $5). The example uses chosen assumptions to show the arithmetic; it is not a recommended risk percentage, a forecast, or a claim that a $5 gap is likely.
Make the estimate more realistic before acting:
- Use a severe-but-plausible scenario, not only a routine move. Consider what would happen if the report materially disappointed or guidance changed the outlook. Do not treat a recent average move as a ceiling on possible loss.
- Account for correlation. If several holdings could fall together after the same report, add their scenario losses. A stock position that fits its own budget can still push the portfolio past its total limit when related holdings are included.
- Adjust for liquidity. Thin trading, wide spreads, and fast markets can make an intended exit harder or more costly. A calculation based on the last quoted price may not reflect the price available when you need to trade.
- Consider leverage and options separately. Shares, long options, and short options do not have the same loss profile. A share-based gap calculation does not capture option premium loss, assignment, or the potential obligations from a short option.
- Do not force a universal percentage. The appropriate limit depends on portfolio size, financial circumstances, concentration, and capacity to absorb loss. If the modeled result exceeds your limit, reduce exposure or choose a different plan rather than quietly raising the limit.
When a holding is too large to fit the scenario, reducing shares is the most direct way to lower the amount exposed to an overnight gap. Recalculate the portfolio scenario after any change; the remaining shares and correlated positions still carry risk.
Should you sell, hold, or hedge before the report?
There is no single right answer for every investor. Choose the action that fits the thesis, loss budget, and mechanics you understand—and make that choice before the release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Choice | What it changes | Main trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce or exit | Reduces or removes the position’s direct exposure to an overnight gap. | You may miss a favorable move or need to decide when and how to re-enter. A market order can execute at a different price than expected in volatile conditions. |
| Hold shares unhedged | Preserves exposure to both favorable and unfavorable reactions. | The gap can exceed an ordinary move or your intended stop level. Hold only if the scenario loss and thesis are acceptable to you. |
| Buy a protective put | Can establish a floor for a share position through the option’s expiration, subject to its terms. | The premium is an upfront cost; implied volatility, strike, expiration, liquidity, and spreads affect the trade. A put does not make every portfolio risk disappear. |
| Use a put spread | Can reduce the premium relative to buying a put alone, while defining protection over a range of prices. | Protection is limited by the spread’s strikes and terms; below the lower strike, additional declines may again affect the shares. The position still has expiration and execution considerations. |
| Use a collar | Combines downside protection with a call that can cap some upside. Nasdaq’s collar material describes collars as frequently used to protect an owned position around significant events such as earnings releases. | The put premium, call proceeds, strikes, expiration, spreads, and potential assignment all matter. The call’s cap can limit gains if the stock rises sharply. |
| Reduce related holdings | Lowers portfolio-wide exposure to a shared industry or business risk. | It may change several investment positions at once and can create trading, tax, or re-entry decisions. Recheck the combined exposure after the adjustment. |
This comparison is conceptual, not a recommendation to trade options. Before using a hedge, establish its maximum loss, upfront cost, implied-volatility sensitivity, liquidity, upside retained or capped, expiration date, and assignment consequences. Also consider taxes and whether the hedge reduces the portfolio’s actual concentration rather than merely changing the shape of one position.

Do stop orders protect you from an earnings gap?
No stop order guarantees a particular sale price. The SEC explains that a stop order becomes a market order when triggered, and execution can differ significantly from the stop price. If a stock gaps through the trigger, the order may execute at the next available price, not at the stop level.
A stop-limit order sets a limit on the price at which you are willing to sell, which can help avoid an unexpectedly low execution price. The trade-off is that it may not execute at all if the market moves past the limit and no buyer is available at an acceptable price. FINRA also warns that sell-stop orders may worsen declines during extreme volatility. These mechanics are especially important when a report occurs outside regular trading hours or prices are moving rapidly.
Do not use a stop as a substitute for sizing the position to tolerate a gap. If you cannot accept the modeled overnight loss, consider reducing the position before the event or using a hedge whose terms and risks you understand. Order availability and handling can vary by broker and product, so check the broker’s current order rules before relying on an order type.
How should you prepare for options expiration and assignment?
If options are part of your earnings position, know what happens if the stock moves sharply and the option is near expiration. The release and post-close trading can affect exercise and assignment decisions; an option that looks manageable before the announcement can create a different stock position afterward.

Before the report, verify the option’s expiration, strike, exercise terms, and what cash or shares would be required if exercise or assignment occurs. If you have sold a call as part of a collar, understand that assignment could require delivery of shares and cap upside. If you have sold a put, understand the possibility of being assigned shares. Do not assume that an option will be automatically closed or handled in the way you prefer; review your broker’s procedures and deadlines.
Options can also lose value when implied volatility falls after an announcement, even if the share price moves in the direction you expected. The size of that effect depends on the contract and market conditions; there is no universal number to apply. Compare the potential hedge benefit with the premium, spread, volatility exposure, and expiration risk before opening it.

- Separate reported results from the outlook. A strong or weak headline number does not by itself establish whether the thesis improved. Check the company’s guidance and the business details that matter to your original rationale.
- Revisit revenue, margins, and cash flow. Ask whether the quality and sustainability of results match your expectations. Review balance-sheet information as part of the company’s ability to fund its plans and obligations.
- Recalculate concentration and risk. The stock price move may have changed the position’s weight in your portfolio. Related holdings may also have moved, so update the exposure map and scenario loss.
- Make a deliberate next decision. If the thesis has changed, decide whether to reduce, exit, or retain the position based on the updated facts and your risk limits. If the thesis remains intact, do not assume that the first market reaction alone proves it.
If you used options, separately check whether they remain open, expired, were exercised, or were assigned, and whether the resulting shares or cash obligations match your plan. A hedge can expire or change value even when the underlying investment thesis has not changed.

What is a practical pre-earnings checklist?
- Report date, release time, and call time confirmed from the company’s official information.
- Shares, options, sector funds, and correlated supplier/customer exposures listed.
- A plausible adverse-gap scenario written down, including combined portfolio effects.
- Dollar event-loss budget set based on capacity for loss—not an assumed universal percentage.
- Position size reduced or hedge selected if the scenario exceeds that budget.
- For options: premium, strikes, expiration, volatility exposure, spreads, assignment, and exercise mechanics understood.
- Order type limitations understood; no assumption that a stop guarantees its trigger price.
- Post-report review plan ready: release, guidance, margins, cash flow, balance sheet, and official call.
This is a general risk-management framework, not individualized financial or tax advice. The cited materials do not establish a universally correct loss percentage or a guaranteed hedge outcome. Investors should account for their circumstances and understand a product’s terms before trading it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trade a stock while its earnings call is still happening?
A stock can trade during a call if its market is open, but prices may react to new statements and can move quickly. Consider whether you have the information and order liquidity you need, and remember that a call may clarify or change the interpretation of the written release.
Can a protective put guarantee that I will not lose money on my shares?
No. A put’s protection depends on its strike, expiration, contract terms, and whether it is held in the quantity needed for the share position. The premium and transaction costs remain costs, and the hedge does not protect unrelated or correlated holdings.
Should I sell an option before earnings or let it expire?
That depends on whether you are long or short, the contract’s terms, and what stock or cash position could result from exercise or assignment. Review the broker’s exercise and expiration procedures before the deadline rather than assuming the option will be handled in a particular way.
Do earnings dates ever change after they are announced?
Companies can update their schedules, so verify the date and release timing with the company’s investor-relations information close to the event. Confirm the call time separately; it may not match the release time.
