Use Chrome’s site permissions to stop or allow website alerts, ChromeOS notification controls to manage app alerts, and Focus to pause notifications temporarily.
Choose the right notification control
| Alert source | Best control | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| A website in Chrome | Chrome > More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications | Changes the default website permission or the permission for an individual site. |
| A Chromebook app | ChromeOS Settings > Apps > Notifications | Turns notifications for apps on or off. |
| A notification already on screen | Notification area next to the clock | Dismisses that alert, clears displayed alerts, or changes future alerts from its source. |
| A temporary pause | Select the time > Focus | Turns on Do Not Disturb while Focus is active. |
| A connected phone | ChromeOS Settings > Connected devices > connected phone | Manages Phone Hub and phone notification syncing. |
Google’s Chromebook notification guide covers website permissions, notification-area controls, Focus, and missing website alerts. For app-specific controls, see Google’s guide to finding and organising apps.
Stop or allow notifications from one website
- Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu).
- Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications.
- Under the site lists, find the website and change its permission. Block it to stop its alerts, or allow it if you want notifications from it.
You can also adjust Chrome’s default behavior for website notification requests on the Notifications settings page. If pop-up permission prompts are disruptive, Chrome offers a quieter prompt option: it avoids interrupting you with pop-ups and leaves a bell by the address bar for you to respond to.
Chrome may automatically block requests from sites it identifies as intrusive or misleading. Private browsing does not deliver Chrome notifications. Review a site’s permission on the Notifications settings page if its alerts are unexpected or absent.

Stop future alerts from a notification
- Select the notification area next to the clock.
- On the notification you want to manage, select its settings control.
- Uncheck the box next to the site, app, or extension whose future alerts you want to stop.
Clear all dismisses notifications currently displayed; it does not change the permissions that determine whether new alerts arrive.
Turn off Chromebook app notifications
To manage app alerts rather than website permissions, open Settings > Apps > Notifications and turn notifications for the relevant apps on or off. Google says Do Not Disturb can silence all app notifications; use Focus when you want a temporary pause instead of changing an app’s notification setting.

Temporarily silence notifications with Focus
- Select the time at the bottom right of the screen.
- Select Focus.
- Turn Do Not Disturb while in Focus on or off.
Google says Do Not Disturb is on by default when Focus Mode is on. This is a temporary control, unlike blocking a site or switching off an app’s notifications.
Restore notifications from a website
If an allowed website stops sending alerts, Chrome may have removed its permission because you had not visited the site for a while. Check the site’s current permission in Chrome, then look in Settings > Privacy and security > Safety Check for removed permissions. You can also visit the site and grant permission again when prompted.

Tell phone alerts apart from Chromebook alerts
Notifications synced from a connected phone are managed through Phone Hub, not through the website permission list in Chrome. Open Settings > Connected devices, select the connected phone, and review the Phone Hub and individual feature controls. Google’s Phone Hub setup and use guide explains the connected-phone feature.

- A control is missing or locked: On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may limit settings. Ask your administrator which controls are available on your device.
- A site does not appear to notify: Check its Chrome permission and Safety Check for permissions Chrome removed. Notifications from Chrome are not delivered in private browsing.
- You need alerts to stay visible longer: Google lists notification management as an accessibility feature, but its accessibility help does not specify a universal display duration or a single settings path. Available options may depend on the device; see Google’s Chromebook accessibility features guide.
