Chrome on Android moves tabs and tab groups you haven’t used for 14 days into an Inactive tabs section, where you can reopen them instead of losing them from the main tab switcher. To find them, open the tab switcher and tap Inactive tabs.
How to find and reopen inactive tabs
- Open Chrome and tap the tab switcher beside the address bar.
- Tap Inactive tabs to view older tabs and tab groups.
- Tap a tab or group to open it again. Chrome updates the active-tab count when a tab becomes active.
Google Chrome Help says a tab or tab group moves to Inactive tabs after 14 days without use. This is a move out of the main tab switcher, not immediate deletion. Google Chrome Help: Manage tabs in Chrome on Android
How to change the inactivity setting
Google’s documented route is More > Settings > Advanced > Tabs > Inactive. There, you can choose when inactive tabs are hidden; selecting Never turns the feature off. Labels and available controls can vary by Chrome version, so follow the closest matching option shown in your app.
Will Chrome eventually close inactive tabs?
Google Pixel Help describes a separate behavior: inactive tabs and groups are automatically closed after six months, and the page says the automatic closure can be turned off. That guidance is for Pixel and does not establish the same closure interval for every Android device, Chrome version, or rollout. Check the Inactive settings on your phone rather than assuming a tab will remain there for a particular length of time. Google Pixel Help: Manage tabs in Chrome

Keep important pages organized
If a page matters, reopen it or bookmark it rather than relying on how long it will stay in Inactive tabs. For deliberate organization, you can also group selected tabs. Google says changes to tab groups are saved and synced across devices signed in to the same Google Account; grouping is a manual option that complements automatic inactivity handling.
