To keep work and personal use distinct on a Chromebook, add a second Google Account if you need it inside apps and websites in your own session; create a separate Chromebook user for someone who regularly shares the device. For focused work, ChromeOS Focus mode can run a timer and task while holding notifications with Do Not Disturb. These controls help organize a device, but they cannot guarantee a healthier work-life balance or block every distraction.

Choose between adding an account and adding a Chromebook user

The right setup depends on whether one person needs multiple accounts or multiple people use the Chromebook. An additional Google Account is for use within your Chromebook session, including supported apps and websites. A separate Chromebook user gives a regular second user their own profile; Google says that user’s synced data and files remain separate.

Setup Best for Where you use it
Additional Google Account One person switching between work and personal accounts Supported apps and websites within the same Chromebook session
Separate Chromebook user A family member or another regular user of the device A separate Chromebook session and profile

On a personal Chromebook, add another account through Time area → Settings → Accounts → Add Google Account. To add a regular user, sign out, then choose Add person. Menu wording can vary by ChromeOS version. On a work- or school-managed device, an administrator may restrict sign-in, so ask them if the option is unavailable. See Google’s account management instructions and instructions for adding a person.

Remove an additional account without deleting it

To remove an additional account from the Chromebook, open Settings → Accounts, find the account under additional accounts, then select Remove this account. This removes the account from the device and signs it out of apps and websites used with that account. It does not delete the Google Account or its data. These steps describe removing an additional account, not deleting a Chromebook user profile.

Check what syncs—and what does not

Google says Chrome can sync history, bookmarks, passwords, and settings when sync is available and enabled. A work or school administrator may turn sync off. Downloads are not synced, so files in the Downloads folder should not be expected to appear automatically when you sign in on another device. Check your sync settings and save important files somewhere appropriate for your workflow. See Google’s Chromebook sync guidance.

Use Focus mode for a defined work session

Focus mode provides a timer, a task, optional focus audio, and a Do Not Disturb setting. Google says Do Not Disturb is turned on by default when Focus mode starts; you can change that behavior. Focus settings carry over between sessions, so check them when your needs change.

  1. Open the time area on the Chromebook shelf and select Focus.
  2. Choose a timer duration.
  3. Select a Google Task or create one for the session.
  4. Optionally choose focus audio and decide whether Do Not Disturb should be on.
  5. Start the session. When it ends, take a deliberate break or choose the next task.

Starting with a task-sized session and taking a break afterward is a practical habit, not a Google-prescribed interval or a proven work-life intervention. Focus mode holds notifications during a session; it is not an account firewall and does not promise to stop every distraction. See Google’s Focus mode instructions.

Set work boundaries that match your responsibilities

At the end of a work period, record what you need to do next and sign out of a work account if that fits your security needs and workflow. Silence or turn off notifications only when doing so will not cause you to miss urgent responsibilities. Account separation and Focus mode are device tools; the boundary itself depends on how you use them.

Set up a child’s Chromebook with the right kind of supervision

For a child using a personal Chromebook, Family Link can manage supported apps, websites, device settings, and screen-time limits. On a shared family device, first determine whether the child uses a separate Chromebook user or has an account added within another user’s session. Separate sign-ins help keep regular users’ synced data apart.

School Google Accounts may also be controlled by the school administrator, and not every Family Link control applies to every school account. Check how the account was added and contact the school about its policies. See Google’s Chromebook guidance for Family Link, Google’s parental-supervision overview, and Google’s guidance for personal Chromebooks.

If a setting or option is missing

  • You cannot add an account or person: A work or school administrator may restrict sign-in. Ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.
  • Sync is unavailable: The administrator may have disabled it. Ask which settings and data are managed by the organization.
  • A menu label differs: ChromeOS version, account type, region, and administrator policy can affect wording and availability. Look for the equivalent account or Focus control, or consult Google Help for your device.
