Background sound should run as a playback session—not as an app kept alive indefinitely. Start it through the platform’s supported audio lifecycle, keep playback active only while the user wants it, and stop the associated service when playback ends. That supports reliable playback without promising zero battery use: the official Android and Apple sources cited here do not publish comparable battery-drain percentages or runtime figures.
How do I keep background audio playing when my screen is off?
The right approach depends on the platform. Android apps must use the appropriate background-audio lifecycle; on iPhone, Apple’s built-in Background Sounds feature gives users controls for ambient audio. In either case, background playback is a deliberate session, not a reason to keep every part of an app running.
Android: make playback a supported media session
Android 17 documentation says background audio interactions need a visible activity or a qualifying foreground service. Apps targeting API 37 must also meet the documented while-in-use capability requirement for background operation. Start playback while the app is visible or in response to an explicit user action, and use the platform’s supported media lifecycle. See Android’s background audio hardening guidance.
For new implementations, Android Developers recommends Media3’s MediaSessionService to manage background playback. With a custom implementation, start a mediaPlayback foreground service while the app is visible when the user starts playback, then maintain it through short, temporary failures. When playback has permanently stopped, end the service and media session; require an explicit user action to resume rather than restarting automatically. iPhone: use the built-in Background Sounds controls
On iPhone, open Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual → Background Sounds. Apple’s guide lets users choose a sound, set its volume, allow it to play while other media is playing, adjust its level relative to that media, set a timer, and choose to stop sounds when iPhone locks. These are user-facing controls, not a published battery-use estimate. Details are in Apple’s Background Sounds guide.
How can I stop background sound from draining my battery?
There is no supported universal battery figure to apply to background sound: the cited official platform sources do not provide comparable percentages, runtime measurements, or benchmarks. Actual battery use therefore cannot be stated as a single reliable number from these sources.

For app design, avoid treating a wake lock or battery-exemption request as a guarantee of playback or a battery-saving fix. Keep the playback session tied to the user’s intent, stop its service when playback is permanently over, and avoid unrelated background work while sound is playing. On Android, account separately for Doze: when an unplugged device is stationary with its screen off for a period, Android defers or restricts background CPU and network activity, wake locks, jobs, syncs, and standard alarms. Network-dependent sound features must tolerate deferred work; continuous remote streaming should not be assumed to behave like local playback in every power state. Google Play restricts direct requests to exempt an app from Doze and App Standby unless those modes adversely affect the app’s core function. An exemption request is not a default substitute for designing around power management. See the Doze and App Standby guidance.

Why does my Android app stop playing audio in the background?
One cause is a lifecycle mismatch. Android 17 can silently suppress playback and volume changes made outside a valid background-audio lifecycle, and audio-focus requests can fail. A wake lock alone does not meet those lifecycle requirements. Check that playback began from a visible activity or explicit user action and is managed by a qualifying service or the recommended media-session approach. The failure modes and requirements are covered in Android’s background audio hardening documentation.
Another cause may be power management rather than the audio session itself. During Doze, network access and many background operations are deferred or restricted, which can affect sound features that depend on ongoing remote work. Test both playback lifecycle behavior and network-dependent behavior under the relevant device conditions.
