Eligible Free and Go users in regions where ChatGPT ads are available or coming soon can manage them under Settings > Ad Controls on the web or iOS app. You can turn off ad personalization, inspect or dismiss an ad, report it, and clear data used for ads. Turning personalization off does not remove ads: OpenAI says the current chat thread may still inform ad selection.
Who sees ads and where the controls are
OpenAI says ads may appear for Free and Go accounts in regions where the feature is available. The U.S. test began on February 9, 2026, with a gradual rollout in select regions. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads. Ad Controls are available to Free and Go users in regions where ads are available or will soon be available. Availability and labels may change as the rollout develops.
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings > Ad Controls on the web or in the iOS app.
- Choose the control you need: switch off personalization, review an ad explanation, dismiss or report an ad, or clear ads data.
- If Ad Controls are missing in the mobile app, update the app and check again. OpenAI says control availability depends on plan and region.
What turning off ad personalization changes
With personalization enabled, OpenAI says ad selection may use select signals from the broader ChatGPT experience, including the current thread, ad interactions, past chats, and memory. When personalization is off, OpenAI says it will not use other chat threads, ads history, or topics to inform ads—but the current conversation thread may still be used. That means the switch limits the signals used for ad selection; it is not a way to stop ads altogether.
OpenAI says memories and recent chats may be referenced in ad selection when Memory is enabled. Temporary Chats do not show ads. These ad controls are distinct from model-training choices: OpenAI describes model-improvement settings separately under Settings > Data Controls.

How to manage an individual ad
Use the ad’s three-dot menu to choose an available action:
- Why this ad: see OpenAI’s explanation of why it appeared.
- Hide or dismiss: remove the ad from view.
- Report: hide the ad and send it to OpenAI for review.
- Ask ChatGPT: share the ad into the conversation if you want to ask about it. OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot see ads by default.
How to clear data used for ads
Choose the option to clear ads data in Settings > Ad Controls when you want to stop that data from being used for ads. OpenAI says removal from its servers may take up to 30 days. Clearing ads data is separate from switching off personalization, and neither setting is the same as the model-training control in Data Controls.

OpenAI says ads may appear below a ChatGPT response, are labeled as sponsored, and are visually separated from the answer. Its Help Center states: “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.” A paid placement is not an endorsement of the advertiser or its product.
An ad can include an advertiser name, favicon, headline, description, landing page, and image. OpenAI says selection can take account of the current conversation context and intent, the ad creative and landing page, advertiser-provided context hints, and—when personalization is enabled—select signals from the broader ChatGPT experience. Those context hints guide matching; they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee an ad will appear in a particular conversation.

Privacy, sensitive topics, and age protections
OpenAI says it does not share ChatGPT conversations with advertisers and does not sell user data to advertisers. It says advertisers receive aggregated, non-identifying performance information, such as total views or clicks. These are OpenAI’s statements as the service provider, not independently audited findings.

OpenAI says ads are not eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated chats, including conversations about personal health, mental health, or politics, and that political advertising is not currently allowed. It also says accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 do not receive ads, using account-level age information and age prediction where available.
