Ad personalization, model training, and OpenAI marketing on third-party properties each have separate controls.
Turn off ad personalization in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings > Ad Controls.
- Turn off ad personalization. The setting controls whether broader ChatGPT signals are used to make ads more relevant; it does not opt you out of seeing ads.
With personalization off, OpenAI says ads may still be informed by the current chat thread. Other chat threads, ads history, and topics are not used to inform ads. In Ad Controls, you can also dismiss an ad, give feedback, see why a particular ad was shown, and clear data used for ads. OpenAI’s ads help article describes these controls.
What data can personalize ads?
When ad personalization is enabled, selected signals may include how you interact with ads and, if memory is enabled, saved memories and recent chats. These are ad-personalization signals; they do not mean advertisers can read your conversations.
OpenAI describes Temporary Chat as a way to chat without using or updating memory while the chat remains temporary. It is a memory control, not a substitute for turning off ad personalization in Ad Controls. OpenAI’s explanation of ads and personalization covers the relationship between these signals and ads.

Keep the three privacy controls separate

These controls address different uses of data, so changing one does not automatically change the others. Settings may vary depending on whether you are signed in, your plan, and workspace settings. If a setting is missing in a managed workspace, ask the workspace owner about organization-level controls. OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ explains the general controls.
Can advertisers see your chats?
OpenAI says, “We do not share your conversations with ChatGPT with advertisers, and we never sell your data to advertisers.” Its help article says advertisers do not receive chat contents, chat history, memories, or personal details. Advertiser reporting is aggregated and non-identifying, such as total views or clicks. Read OpenAI’s ads and privacy explanation for its description of advertiser access and reporting.

Clear data used for ads
You can clear data used for ads through Ad Controls. OpenAI says cleared ads data is no longer used to show ads and may be retained for up to 30 days before removal. This concerns ads data; it is not the same as deleting your chats or changing whether new conversations may be used for model training. OpenAI’s ads help article states the retention period.

Availability depends on plan and region. OpenAI documents Ad Controls for Free and Go users in regions where ads are available or expected soon. It says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads. The initial U.S. test began February 9, 2026, with a gradual rollout in selected regions; personalized ads were initially unavailable in the EEA and Switzerland. Because rollout and regional availability can change, check current in-product notices rather than relying on an old country list.
