First, check what is migrating. Polymarket’s documented April 28, 2026 exchange upgrade said positions in active markets would carry over and resolve normally, but that statement does not establish what happens in every market-specific contract migration. If you want to exit before a market resolves, you can try to sell to another trader; if it has resolved, you can redeem the position. Check the notice for your specific market before acting.
Identify the change before deciding what to do
“Migration” can refer to different events. Polymarket’s materials distinguish its platform-wide exchange-stack upgrade from a market clarification, and neither alone establishes the rules for an unspecified market-specific contract migration.
- Platform-wide exchange upgrade: For the April 28, 2026 upgrade, Polymarket said positions in active markets carried over and resolved normally. This is a statement about that upgrade, not a universal migration policy. Polymarket’s upgrade notice.
- Market clarification: Polymarket says clarification clears the order book and cancels resting orders, including when an advance clarification announcement is made. A clarification is not the same thing as an exchange-stack upgrade. See How Are Markets Clarified?.
- Notice about a particular market or contract: Read that market’s page, rules and notice. The platform-wide upgrade notice does not say how every individual market migration affects shares. If the notice does not explain your position’s status, contact Polymarket support.
Decide whether to hold, sell or redeem
Hold an active position through the documented upgrade
For the April 2026 exchange-stack upgrade specifically, Polymarket said active-market positions would carry over and resolve normally. The upgrade involved new exchange contracts, a rewritten order book and a new collateral token, pUSD. The notice described pUSD as a Polygon ERC-20 backed 1:1 by USDC; that description is not a guarantee about investment risk or the cost of related transactions.
The notice also said most users would encounter a one-time approval flow to convert their balance to pUSD and approve the new exchange contracts. Deposit or withdrawal conversions may involve fees or routing costs, so check the interface before confirming a transaction.

Sell before resolution if you want to exit
Polymarket describes trading as peer-to-peer: an exit depends on another trader being willing to buy your shares. You can submit a market sell against the prevailing bid or set a limit price and wait for a buyer at that price. The available bids and the likelihood of a fill depend on the individual market; the help material does not establish a price or execution probability for your position. See Can I Sell Early? and Is Polymarket The House?.
| Sell method | Price control | Execution trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Market order | Uses the prevailing bid; you do not set a specific sale price. | Can sell against available bids, but the actual price depends on what buyers are offering when the order reaches the book. |
| Limit order | You choose the price. | It only fills if a buyer is willing to trade at that price, so it may not execute. |
Redeem after resolution
Once a market has resolved, Polymarket’s legacy guide directs users to Portfolio, where the position control changes from Trade to Redeem; select Redeem and confirm. The guide is legacy documentation, so current button labels or flow may differ. Consult Selling & redeeming shares and verify the current interface.

Keep shares and resting orders separate
A position is not the same as an open order to trade that position. In the April 2026 exchange upgrade, Polymarket said the pre-upgrade order books were cleared and resting orders were cancelled. A carried-over position therefore did not mean an old order remained active: users who still wanted an order resting after the upgrade had to place it again. Clarifications can also clear the order book and cancel resting orders under Polymarket’s clarification guidance.
What to check if your market is migrating now
- Open the market page and read its rules and migration or clarification notice. Confirm whether it is a platform-wide upgrade, a clarification, or a market-specific contract change.
- Check the position itself separately from any open orders. Do not assume an order survived a book-clearing event just because shares remain visible.
- If the market is active and you want out, compare the available bid with the price you would set on a limit order. A limit order can remain unfilled if no buyer accepts that price.
- If the market has resolved, look for the current redemption action in Portfolio and follow the interface’s confirmation steps.
- If your position display or market status conflicts with the notice, contact Polymarket support rather than assuming the April 2026 upgrade policy applies to that market.
Historical timing and developer note
Polymarket’s upgrade notice described trading pausing for about an hour, starting around 11:00 UTC on April 28, 2026. That was planned timing for a completed historical upgrade, not a schedule or downtime estimate for a later change.
