Make the product and the review’s real takeaway clear at a glance, then check that the image is truthful, legible on a small screen, and uploaded in the right format for your video. For a standard YouTube video, the recommended thumbnail is 3840 × 2160 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio; YouTube accepts JPG and PNG. You can upload a custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio if your account is verified.
How do I make a YouTube thumbnail for a product review?
Start with what the video actually demonstrates: the product, a meaningful test, or a conclusion viewers will hear in the review. A thumbnail and title offer an initial snapshot, so they should accurately represent the video rather than promise a result it does not deliver. YouTube recommends designing with your intended audience in mind and keeping the composition simple; too many competing details can overwhelm the image.
1. Choose one visual idea
Decide what a viewer should recognize first. It might be the product itself, a comparison between two items, or a review outcome that is genuinely shown in the video. Keep the product prominent and remove background clutter or decorative elements that distract from that idea.

2. Capture options while filming
Take several product photos during the shoot, rather than relying on a single frame later. YouTube recommends capturing pictures while filming so you have options when it is time to upload. A phone tripod can help steady a product shot, but it is optional—not a YouTube requirement.

3. Make the image readable at small sizes
Preview the thumbnail at a reduced size. The product should remain recognizable, and any text should be short and easy to read. Use color and composition to draw attention without making the image crowded. YouTube notes that thumbnails appear differently across devices, so check the image at more than one size when possible.
4. Keep the promise accurate
Show only product features, test results, and conclusions that the video actually supports. YouTube prohibits misleading thumbnail imagery and requires thumbnails to follow its Community Guidelines. A dramatic visual that implies an unshown result can mislead viewers even if the product itself is pictured accurately.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
For standard videos, YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a minimum width of 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are supported. The current help page lists a maximum file size of 2 MB for mobile uploads and 50 MB for desktop uploads; check the upload interface in case requirements have changed.

How do I upload a custom thumbnail on YouTube?
Custom video thumbnails are available when your account is verified. YouTube may also show suggested thumbnail options; Ask Studio can generate suggestions based on a video’s transcript and themes.
- Open YouTube Studio and select the video you want to edit.
- Find the Thumbnail section in the video’s details and choose Upload file.
- Select your image, making sure its dimensions, format, and file size match the relevant requirements for your video type and upload device.
- Save the change, then check how the thumbnail appears on the video’s page and in other viewing contexts.
If you do not see the upload option, check that the account is verified and that you are editing the correct video in Studio. For Shorts, the cited help page specifies adding custom thumbnails through Studio on a computer.
