To make a Samsung Galaxy phone louder, first identify what is quiet—media, a call, the ringtone, notifications, or system sounds—then raise that sound’s separate slider. If the problem happens only with headphones or Bluetooth audio, check Media volume limit instead. These steps follow Samsung’s US support guidance; menu names and feature availability vary by model and software version.
Raise the slider for the sound you want to hear
Galaxy phones separate volume for media, calls, ringtones, notifications, and system sounds. Turning up one category may not change another. Samsung’s general instructions are in its guide to adjusting volume on a Galaxy phone.
- Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume.
- Raise the slider for the sound that is too quiet: Media for music and video, Ringtone for incoming calls, Notifications for alerts, or System for interface sounds. The available sliders can vary by device.
- For media, you can also press a Volume key while audio is playing. Expand the volume control’s menu to see and adjust other sound types.
Test the same sound again after changing its slider. This helps distinguish a volume setting from an app, connection, or speaker problem.
If callers are hard to hear
Call audio has its own adjustment. While a call is active, press the phone’s Volume up key to raise the call volume; changing the media slider is not the same adjustment. Samsung gives this step in its guide to fixing low sound during calls.

If call volume is already high but the other person still sounds muffled, check whether a phone case or protective film is covering the receiver opening. Remove or reposition anything obstructing it, then test another call.
If headphones or Bluetooth audio will not get louder
When the volume seems to stop rising over headphones or a Bluetooth speaker, check Media volume limit. Samsung’s US path is Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume > More options > Media volume limit. The setting is intended to limit volume on connected headphones or Bluetooth speakers as a hearing-protection measure. If the limit is enabled, review the on-screen warning and choose a comfortable listening level. Do not treat disabling the limit as the default fix: prolonged loud listening can harm hearing. If the menu path is missing, labels or availability may differ on your model or software version.
Check for mute settings and other interruptions
If sound is missing or unexpectedly low across multiple categories, check both the relevant slider and the phone’s mute-related settings. Samsung says Mute all sounds can suppress media, notifications, system sounds, and the other person’s voice during calls.

- Check Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements and turn off Mute all sounds if it is enabled unintentionally. The menu may be arranged differently on some models.
- Check whether Do not disturb is active if alerts or ringtone sounds are the issue.
- Restart the phone if the settings look correct but sound remains abnormal. Samsung includes these checks in its no-sound troubleshooting guidance.
Use hearing enhancements for connected listening
Samsung offers a few options that can make connected audio more comfortable or easier to hear. They personalize how sound is delivered; they are not established ways to increase the built-in speaker’s maximum output.
- Adapt sound can personalize connected listening for each ear. Depending on the device, look in sound settings or under Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements.
- Mono audio combines stereo channels into one signal for connected audio, which may help if stereo separation makes some material difficult to hear.
- Left/right sound balance adjusts the balance between connected audio channels.
These options and their exact locations depend on device and software version. Samsung describes them in its guide to hearing enhancements and its sound-settings guidance.

Route app audio to an external speaker
If the handset speaker does not meet your needs, an external listening device is a separate option. Samsung’s Separate app sound feature can play selected app media through a Bluetooth speaker or headset, separately from other phone sounds. Find it under Settings > Sounds and vibration > Separate app sound on supported devices; the exact path and availability can vary. See Samsung’s Separate app sound instructions.
A portable Bluetooth speaker can make media easier to hear in a room, but it does not boost the Galaxy phone’s own speaker. No Samsung setting cited here specifies a decibel increase, so the practical result depends on the device, audio source, and listening setup.
When these steps do not help
Samsung’s support pages are primarily for the US, and settings differ across Galaxy models and software versions. If sound remains distorted or unusually quiet after checking the relevant slider, connected-audio limit, mute settings, and receiver opening, contact Samsung Support for model-specific troubleshooting.
