If you are using an iPhone or Pixel, check its automatic brightness setting too. Accessibility display options can make text easier to distinguish, while a compatible anti-reflective protector is an optional fix for persistent glare.
Raise brightness and enable automatic adjustment
Bright sunlight can make a display look washed out because the screen has to compete with ambient light and reflections. Raise brightness first; automatic brightness can also adapt the display to changing light. The setting names and behavior vary by phone and software version.
iPhone
- Open Control Center and raise the brightness slider, or go to Settings > Display & Brightness and adjust Brightness.
- To check automatic adjustment, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and turn on Auto-Brightness. Apple says iPhone uses its ambient-light sensor to adjust brightness and that turning Auto-Brightness off may increase power consumption. See Apple’s iPhone display and text size settings guide.
Google Pixel
- Go to Settings > Display & touch > Brightness level and raise the slider.
- In Settings > Display & touch, enable Adaptive brightness. Google says this is on by default and learns your preferences over time.
On Pixel 4 and later, Adaptive brightness can temporarily raise the screen above its normal maximum in extremely bright ambient light, including direct sunlight. That behavior is specifically documented for those Pixel models; do not assume every Android phone has the same boost. Menu names can differ by Android version and locale. Reduce reflections without changing settings
- Step into open shade when possible. Even partial shade can make the display easier to see.
- Tilt or rotate the phone so reflected sunlight or bright surroundings no longer bounce into your eyes. A small angle change may help without reducing brightness.
Improve text legibility with accessibility settings
If the screen is bright enough but text or interface elements remain difficult to distinguish, try larger or bold text and increased contrast in your phone’s accessibility display settings. On iPhone, these options are under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size; Reduce Transparency can make some interface backgrounds solid. These settings change how content is presented, not the display’s physical brightness, and they will not eliminate reflections.

Should you get an anti-glare screen protector?
Consider one only if glare is a recurring problem after trying brightness, shade, and viewing-angle changes. Choose a protector specified for your exact phone model and check what kind of film it uses:
- Clear anti-reflective film is designed to reduce reflections while retaining a clearer-looking image.
- Matte anti-glare film diffuses reflections, but the surface can add haze or make the image look less crisp. NuShield, a film manufacturer, also says its matte film can darken in very bright sun; these are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Samsung lists an anti-reflecting protector for the Galaxy S24 and markets it for viewing in direct sun. That is a model-specific accessory and a manufacturer claim, not evidence that the same product fits other phones or that every protector improves readability. Before buying any film, check model compatibility, touch compatibility, image clarity, availability, and whether it also offers the scratch protection you want. A privacy filter serves a different purpose and can restrict off-angle viewing, so it is not a general sunlight solution.

Keep the phone from overheating
High brightness can use more power. Avoid leaving the phone in direct sun, especially if it is already warm. Google advises Pixel users to move the phone out of the sun and let it cool if it gets too hot; see Google’s guidance on keeping a Pixel within its operating temperature range.
