Make your home more comfortable for an indoor cat by giving it safe places to hide and rest, elevated places to observe, separate access to food, water, litter and scratching areas, and daily chances to play and explore. The best setup is one your cat can use without being crowded or forced into interaction; costly products are optional, and your cat’s behavior is the best guide to what works.
Start with safety, choice, and separate resources
A comfortable home supports a cat’s everyday needs, not just its need for a soft bed. The AAFP and ISFM describe a safe haven, separate food, water, toileting, scratching and resting areas, opportunities for play and predatory behavior, and positive, consistent human–cat interactions as parts of a cat’s environment. Their Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines offer a useful framework for arranging your home.
Where space allows, avoid clustering every essential resource in one corner. Put food, water, litter, resting and scratching areas in distinct locations. In a home with more than one cat, arrange access so a cat can reach essentials without having to compete with, pass, or confront another cat.
Make room for retreat and rest
Give your cat a quiet, protected place to retreat to, with a clear way in and out. A cardboard box on its side, a familiar carrier with part of it covered, or a covered bed can work. Offer more than one resting option if you can, and notice which spots the cat chooses. A commercial cat cave is not necessary.

Provide vertical space and a place to scratch
Indoor cats need ways to climb, perch, and engage in normal behavior. The 2024 AAFP indoor/outdoor lifestyle position statement identifies vertical space, safe resting places, play, simulated hunting and foraging, and toileting among the resources relevant to indoor-only cats.

A cat tree can combine a perch and scratching surface, but it is only one option. When choosing or arranging a perch, consider whether it is stable, reachable, and large enough for the cat to rest on. Provide scratching as a separate resource from food and litter areas; choose a surface and location your cat will use.
Make the litter area easy to use
Choose a litter box with enough room for your cat to enter, turn around, and use comfortably. Its location should be accessible and separate from food and water. Keep it clean, and pay attention to the cat’s response to the box, its entry height, and the litter itself.

The 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines give a size benchmark: a tray about 1.5 times the cat’s length, measured from nose to the base of the tail, where space allows. The guidelines also discuss low-sided or otherwise accessible entry for cats that need it, and note that unscented clumping litter is generally preferred in the veterinary environment. At home, account for the individual cat’s mobility and litter preference rather than treating a clinical-environment recommendation as a universal rule.
Separate food and water, especially in multi-cat homes
Place food and water apart from each other and from the litter area. In a multi-cat household, separate feeding stations can give each cat a less stressful way to eat. Look for locations where one cat cannot easily block another’s access to food or water.

Build in play and foraging
Offer regular opportunities for play and activities that let your cat stalk, chase, or work for food. An interactive toy or puzzle feeder can be useful if your cat engages with it, but neither is essential, and the cited guidelines do not prescribe one best toy or schedule. Adapt activities to your cat’s interest and abilities. Follow product-specific safety guidance, and do not leave toys accessible unsupervised if they could be unsafe.

Positive, consistent interaction is part of a comfortable environment. Let the cat approach and withdraw rather than insisting on contact. Consider the room’s sensory experience too: new equipment will not make a space comfortable if the cat seems unsettled by noise, strong scents, activity, or unpredictability. Watch how your cat uses the space and adjust what you can.

Choose equipment by fit, not by claims
Products can make a home easier to arrange, but no particular brand or model is established as superior by the cited guidelines. If you shop, use practical fit as your checklist:
- Cat tree or perch: Check stability, reachable height, footprint, usable resting surface, and scratching material.
- Litter box: Consider interior size, entry height, ease of cleaning, mobility needs, and the cat’s demonstrated litter preference.
- Hideaway: Look for a quiet location, easy access and exit, and a design you can keep clean. Whether the cat chooses to use it matters more than its appearance.
- Puzzle feeder or toy: Judge whether the cat engages with it, whether it fits your routine, and whether it can be used safely.
Simple household options, such as a box or a cleared shelf, may meet a need just as well as a purchased item. The professional guidance supports the needs these items can serve; it does not compare products, prices, durability, or customer ratings.
When a change in behavior needs attention
A cat that suddenly seems uncomfortable, changes its activity, or begins toileting differently may need more than a home rearrangement. Environmental adjustments can improve access and choice, but they are not a diagnosis or treatment. Ask a veterinarian for individualized advice about a sudden or concerning change.
