Start by checking the door, frame, deadbolt and strike area as one assembly. If the frame or door is loose or damaged, ask your landlord to repair it before adding hardware. With approval, a compatible heavy-duty strike plate fastened securely to the frame may strengthen the strike area. Any improvement must still let you leave from inside immediately, without a key.
Why the door, frame and lock must work together
A strong deadbolt cannot compensate for a weak door, damaged frame or poorly secured strike area. Seattle Police recommends anchoring strike plates and frames to the home’s main construction, rather than treating the lock alone as the security system. Inspect the door before choosing an improvement
- Look for a door or frame that is loose, cracked, warped or otherwise damaged.
- Operate the deadbolt. Check that the bolt extends and retracts cleanly and that the strike area appears firmly attached.
- If the door or frame is damaged, report the issue to the landlord or property manager. Adding a stronger strike plate to a damaged assembly may not address the underlying weakness.
Ask before altering a rental door
Before drilling into or replacing the door, frame, hinges or lock, ask the landlord for approval. Lease terms and local rules differ, and a modification that seems simple can affect the door, hardware or the building’s required means of exit. Texas law, for example, sets requirements for certain residential security devices and describes landlord duties when those devices are inoperable; those rules apply in Texas, not everywhere. Consider a compatible heavy-duty strike plate
If the landlord approves and the existing door and frame can accept the hardware, a heavy-duty strike plate secured with long screws is one possible reinforcement. Seattle Police’s door-security bulletin discusses a four-screw heavy-duty plate and 3–4 inch screws. Check compatibility with the existing lock and frame, and have the landlord or a qualified installer confirm how the plate should attach. A product label alone does not establish that the plate will fit or that the frame can take the screws.
Keep the inside exit quick and key-free
Do not install a device that requires a key or special knowledge or effort to leave from inside. How to choose what to do next
- Door or frame damaged: Report it to the landlord and request repair before considering added hardware.
- Assembly appears sound, but strike area needs attention: Ask whether a compatible heavy-duty strike plate can be installed and how it will be secured.
- Any proposed change affects the lock or exit: Do not proceed unless it is approved and still allows immediate, key-free exit from inside.
