You do not have to switch off useful notifications, location services, or connectivity across the board. Menu names and available features vary by manufacturer, phone model, and Android version; Google’s Android battery guidance recommends checking your device maker’s instructions when settings differ.
Start with the screen and battery-usage list
The display is a practical place to begin because brightness and the time the screen stays on are settings you can change without shutting off a service you may rely on.
- Lower screen brightness to a comfortable level. Adaptive brightness can adjust it to surrounding light if that suits how you use your phone.
- Shorten screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when you leave the phone idle.
- Review battery usage to find apps or activities that account for unusually high use. Look for high background use as well as high total use before deciding whether to change an app’s settings.
Google lists brightness, adaptive brightness, and screen timeout among its Android battery-saving options. Pixel phones also offer Dark theme and, on supported models, the option to turn off Always-on Display. Those Pixel-specific controls and menu paths may not exist on other Android phones. Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization on
Where your phone offers them, Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization can manage power use based on how you use apps. Google says Pixel’s Adaptive Battery learns usage patterns; after setting up or resetting a Pixel, it may take a few weeks to optimize. Optimization can delay some notifications or reduce performance, so consider whether timely alerts from a particular app matter to you.

On Pixel, Google recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled. Review battery usage before restricting an app, and avoid force-stopping everything or disabling core services as a blanket fix. Some essential services cannot be optimized. Use Battery Saver when its trade-offs are acceptable
Battery Saver is useful when you need to stretch a low charge, but it is a situational setting rather than a requirement for everyday use. Depending on the phone, it can limit or pause background activity and may delay notifications, affect network connections, reduce visual effects, or change how some apps work.

Turn it on when those trade-offs are acceptable—for example, when you are away from a charger and can tolerate less frequent background updates. If you need a particular app or alert to work normally, check how Battery Saver affects it on your device. Google describes these limitations in its Android battery guidance.
Scale back power-intensive activities only when you can
Some activities use more power while they are running. Reduce or shorten them when you do not need them, rather than turning off a feature everywhere:

- Long navigation sessions or continuous GPS use
- Mobile hotspot use
- Video streaming and other extended video playback
- Graphics-heavy games
- Prolonged camera or video recording sessions
For instance, stop a hotspot when no device needs it, but keep location available if you rely on navigation, safety features, or location sharing. Google identifies these kinds of activities as possible sources of higher battery use; their effect depends on your phone and how you use it. See Google Android Help.
Protect long-term battery health and avoid heat
Daily runtime and long-term battery health are related, but they are not the same. A phone that is hot can drain faster, and heat can damage its battery. Google states: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Keep the phone out of hot environments where practical, especially when charging or running demanding activities.

You do not need to fully discharge and recharge the phone to teach it its capacity. Google says, “You don’t need to teach your phone the battery’s capacity by going from full charge to zero, or zero to full.” Pixel devices may offer charging optimization or an optional 80% charge limit to support battery care. These are model-specific long-term health options; they do not increase the charge available for today’s use. Details are in Google’s Pixel battery-care guidance.

If one app stands out in battery usage, review its background activity or battery settings rather than restricting every app. On Pixel, Google’s troubleshooting instructions describe reviewing Battery usage and restricting apps with high background or overall use. Pixel 6 and later also include Battery diagnostics with a “Battery draining too quickly” option.

A somewhat higher drain for a few days after a software update can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software. If unusual drain continues beyond a few days, follow your manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance or contact its support team. Pixel-specific steps are documented in Google Pixel Phone Help; other Android devices may use different diagnostics and settings.
Charging accessories are not a runtime fix
If you need charging equipment, use the adapter supplied with your phone or one your manufacturer confirms is compatible. Google warns that other adapters may charge slowly, fail to charge, or damage the device or battery. A compatible charger helps recharge the phone; it does not make the battery last longer while unplugged. See Google’s charging guidance and your phone maker’s compatibility information.
