Installing Google Play or changing the launcher may get you closer to an Android-style setup, but those are unofficial, model- and software-dependent changes—not a reliable way to turn every Fire tablet into stock Android. First identify your exact tablet and Fire OS version.
1. Identify your Fire tablet and Fire OS version
Before trying instructions for Google Play or a replacement launcher, open Settings > Device Options > About Fire Tablet and note the model, generation, and software version. Amazon’s Fire Tablet Software Updates page lists different Fire OS branches across generations. As listed on October 8, 2026, Fire OS 8 covers several 13th-generation models, including Fire HD 10, Fire Max 11, Fire HD 8, and Fire 7; some earlier models use Fire OS 7 or older branches. These details can change, so check Amazon’s current listing for your specific device rather than assuming a guide for another Fire tablet applies.
Fire OS is based on Android, but it is not stock Android. Amazon describes Fire OS 8 as based on Android 10 and Android 11 in its Fire OS overview. That Android foundation does not mean Google services are officially supported: Amazon’s Fire OS 7 documentation says Google services cannot be used on Amazon Fire devices. A Google Play Help Community answer also says Fire OS is not officially supported by Google Play, which is not a compatibility guarantee for every individual app.
2. Hide Home screen recommendations
This is the safest, supported way to make the Fire Home screen less promotional. Amazon documents this path:

- Open Settings > Apps and Notifications > Amazon App Settings > Home Screens.
- Turn off Recommendations and Continue and Discover Row.
To dismiss an individual item in the Discover row instead, long-press it and choose Not Interested. Menu names or locations may differ slightly across Fire OS versions; if the path does not match, follow Amazon’s current recommendation-removal instructions.
3. Understand what removing ads changes
Lock-screen ads and Home screen recommendations are separate. Turning off recommendations does not remove ads shown on the lock screen. Amazon says some Fire tablet models are sold at a subsidized price with personalized advertising; eligible owners who originally bought an ad-supported device can make a one-time payment through their Amazon account to remove those ads. Check the live account options for the device—Amazon’s Kindle and Fire Tablet ads help page does not state a current price.

4. Decide whether unofficial Google Play installation is worth it
Google Play is not a built-in or officially supported Fire tablet feature. Some third-party instructions describe manually installing Play Store components on certain Fire tablets, but the files and procedure depend on the model and Fire OS version. For example, Yahoo Tech’s installation guide covers this as an unofficial process. It does not make a Fire tablet Play Protect certified, guarantee every Google-dependent app will work, or represent Amazon endorsement.
There is no single package recipe established for every model. If you consider sideloading, use instructions that explicitly match your exact generation and software version, and understand that a Fire OS update can affect behavior. If the app you need depends on Google services, installing the Play Store alone may not be enough.

5. Treat launcher replacement as a separate, uncertain change
A replacement launcher and making that launcher open whenever you press Home are not the same result. A third-party guide, iTechGuides’ launcher instructions, discusses non-root changes for some Fire OS 7 and 8 tablets, while warning that Amazon updates can change launcher behavior. A launcher may be installable or openable without reliably replacing Amazon Home as the default.
Amazon’s ADB documentation explains USB or network connectivity for developers; it does not establish an official consumer method for replacing the launcher. Avoid assuming that ADB steps or launcher behavior documented for one tablet will work on another.

6. Update only with software for your exact device
If troubleshooting requires a software update, Amazon’s manual update instructions describe transferring an update file over USB and applying it through Settings > Device Options > System Updates. Use only the update intended for your exact Fire tablet model; a package for a different device is not interchangeable.
