To get more listening time from wireless noise-cancelling headphones, check your exact model’s battery-life figures, then turn off ANC or optional audio features when you do not need them, prevent the headphones from staying on while idle, and use a compatible charger for top-ups. These steps can reduce power use or restore charge sooner; they do not increase the battery’s capacity. Results depend on the model, codec, settings and conditions, so manufacturer maximums are useful comparisons—not guarantees of your runtime.
The goal is useful listening time, not switching off every feature you bought the headphones to use. A quiet commute may be worth the runtime trade-off of ANC; a long, quiet work session may not need it. Start by identifying which settings matter on your model, then make changes that fit the way you listen.
Which settings have the biggest effect on battery life?
Start with settings the manufacturer identifies as affecting runtime, and change them selectively. Turning ANC off can help on some models, but it removes noise cancellation. Other features—such as immersive audio, sound processing and voice-assistant functions—may also use power. There is no single set of toggles that saves the same amount on every pair of headphones.

Published runtime figures are best read as comparisons between specified conditions, not promises. A maximum may describe a particular codec and feature combination, and actual time can vary with model, settings and use. Compare like with like: the same headphone generation, codec and ANC or immersive-audio mode. Figures for one manufacturer’s model do not establish what another pair will achieve.

ANC and awareness modes
Sony lists up to 30 hours of AAC playback with ANC on and 40 hours with ANC off for the WH-1000XM5. With LDAC, the corresponding published maxima are 26 and 36 hours. Sony lists the same runtime for Ambient Sound Mode as for ANC on in each of those codec rows, so switching to ambient mode is not a documented battery-saving measure on this model. These are Sony’s figures in its WH-1000XM5 operating-time table, not a guarantee for every user or headphone model; the guide does not state a publication year.
In those Sony examples, turning ANC off is associated with a 10-hour difference between the published AAC maxima and also between the LDAC maxima. That is a comparison of Sony’s stated conditions, not a claim that every listener will gain exactly 10 hours. If you need to hear announcements or remain aware of your surroundings, do not turn off an awareness mode just to pursue a longer estimate. On the WH-1000XM5, Ambient Sound Mode is listed at the same runtime as ANC, so choose it for awareness rather than expecting a documented power saving.
For the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), Bose lists up to 30 hours with noise reduction on and immersive audio off, 23 hours with both on, and 45 hours with both off. Bose says it tested these figures in April 2025. They illustrate why it is worth checking for a separate spatial or immersive-audio setting instead of assuming ANC is the only significant option.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11In Bose’s published comparison, keeping noise reduction on and turning immersive audio off corresponds to seven more hours than the both-on scenario; turning both off corresponds to 22 more than both on. These figures are tied to that specific second-generation model and Bose’s test conditions. They are not a forecast for other Bose generations or other headphones. If immersive audio is central to how you use the headphones, keep it on when you want it; if you do not need it for a particular session, test the off setting.
Optional processing and features
Sony warns that DSEE Extreme, Speak-to-Chat, EQ, voice-assistant wake and Service Link can shorten WH-1000XM5 operating time. Its guide also identifies sound-quality priority, ANC and ambient mode among factors to check when runtime is short. Sony does not give a separate number of hours saved for each feature, so disable only the ones you can do without and judge them against your own listening needs.
That means there is no evidence-based “turn off these five things and add a fixed number of hours” recipe. Instead, make one change, use the headphones under similar conditions, and decide whether the feature’s benefit is worth its possible runtime cost. For example, if you rarely use voice-assistant wake or Speak-to-Chat, disabling it is a reasonable test; if you rely on it, its convenience may be worth keeping. Do not treat every sound or convenience setting as equally costly, because the manufacturer does not assign each one an individual hour figure.
Bluetooth codec
A supported codec can affect the published runtime. On the WH-1000XM5, Sony’s AAC figures are higher than its LDAC figures in both ANC-on and ANC-off scenarios. That is a model-specific comparison, not a universal rule for every headphone or source device. If the app and headphone let you choose a codec, treat it as a sound-quality-versus-runtime choice; Sony’s app can show the connected codec and remaining charge.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For this Sony model, compare AAC with AAC—30 hours ANC on or 40 hours ANC off—or LDAC with LDAC—26 hours on or 36 off. Do not compare the 30-hour AAC ANC-on figure with an LDAC ANC-off figure and attribute the difference to only one setting. The codec and noise-control mode would both have changed. Also confirm which codec is actually connected: a preferred setting is not useful as a baseline if the connection is using something else.
The WH-1000XM5 app’s codec and remaining-charge displays can help make that check practical. The point is not to chase a particular codec at all times, but to know which configuration you are evaluating. The cited manufacturer material does not establish a numerical runtime saving from turning Bluetooth multipoint off, so do not assume that disabling it will produce a predictable gain.

How do I work out why my headphones are not lasting as long?
Compare your listening conditions with the manufacturer’s closest published scenario before changing several settings at once. A headline maximum is not a prediction for mixed use, and comparing different models or different codecs can lead to the wrong conclusion.
- Charge the headphones according to their model guide. Begin the comparison from a full charge rather than estimating from a partial one.
- Record the conditions that matter. Note the ANC or awareness mode, codec, immersive or spatial audio, optional processing and automatic shutoff setting. On the WH-1000XM5, check the connected codec and remaining charge in Sony’s app.
- Choose a matching manufacturer figure. For the WH-1000XM5, compare AAC with AAC or LDAC with LDAC, and match ANC on or off. Do not treat figures for another model as a baseline for yours.
- Change one setting at a time. If quiet is not important for a particular session, try turning ANC off. If your headphones have optional processing, test disabling an identified feature you do not need. Keep useful awareness or sound features when their benefit matters more than the possible runtime gain.
- Check idle behavior and charging. If runtime seems to disappear when you are not listening, verify that the headphones power down as expected. If charging itself is taking unusually long, check the cable and power source against the manufacturer’s instructions.
This approach helps separate ordinary differences caused by settings from a battery that may have deteriorated. A markedly shortened runtime that persists under comparable conditions is a reason to consult the manufacturer or an authorized service provider, not to keep switching settings indefinitely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen checking a short-runtime problem, look at both playback and storage. A headphone that remains powered in a bag can lose charge even though the listening session itself seemed normal. Separately, Sony’s WH-1000XM5 troubleshooting guidance flags sound-quality priority, ANC and ambient mode when operating time is short. Check the feature list and settings for the exact model rather than assuming the same suspects apply to all headphones.
Keep the comparison simple enough to interpret. If you change codec, ANC, immersive audio and auto-off at once, you will not know which change mattered. A useful test is to hold the configuration steady, note how long it lasts in a typical session, then alter one setting and compare under similar conditions. This will not reproduce a controlled lab test, but it is more informative than comparing unrelated days or guessing from a battery indicator alone.
How can I stop headphones draining while unused?
Make sure automatic shutoff is enabled at a practical delay, and switch the headphones fully off before putting them away if you are unsure whether they have powered down. Wear detection and sleep modes are model-specific, so check the exact model and firmware rather than assuming every pair behaves alike.
Idle controls can be a straightforward way to avoid wasting charge between sessions. An automatic shutoff feature is useful if you take the headphones off and forget them, but it is not a substitute for checking what happens when you pack them away. A case or bag may affect wear detection, and sleep is not always the same as fully off.

Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony says the WH-1000XM5 normally powers off after 15 minutes unworn when its automatic power-off function is enabled. The Sony guide also warns that wear detection can react incorrectly when the headphones are in a bag. If you find the headphones still on after storage, turn them off manually before packing them away rather than relying on detection alone.
If you often pause listening for longer than a few minutes, check the auto-off option and choose a delay that suits your routine. Avoid assuming that simply removing the headphones will always trigger shutdown: the manufacturer specifically notes the possibility of a bag interfering with detection. A manual power-off before storage is the dependable fallback when you are not sure.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra, first generation
Bose distinguishes Sleep, which conserves some battery, from Off, which uses none, on the first-generation QuietComfort Ultra. Bose says the sleep delay changed from 10 minutes to 5 minutes beginning with software version 1.6.7. Those details apply to the first-generation model and should not be transferred to the second generation.

This is why generation and firmware matter when following a support instruction. A setting name such as Sleep does not necessarily mean zero power use, and a delay described for one version should not be treated as a universal Bose setting. Consult the support page for the specific product and installed software if idle drain is the concern.

A compatible charger and cable can restore listening time faster, but they do not increase the battery’s capacity. Follow the exact model’s charging instructions: connector shape alone does not establish that a charger or charging feature is compatible.
WH-1000XM5 charging requirements
For the WH-1000XM5, Sony recommends a commercial USB Power Delivery adapter compatible with 5 V/2 A or 9 V/3 A and advises using the supplied USB-C cable. Sony says a full charge from empty takes about 3.5 hours under its stated conditions, and recommends an ambient temperature of 15–35 °C for efficient charging. Sony cautions that compatibility with all USB PD equipment is not guaranteed.
Those specifications are useful when selecting or checking a power source: the phrase “USB-C charger” alone does not confirm the supported output or USB Power Delivery behavior. Sony recommends its supplied cable, and the cited guidance does not establish that an arbitrary replacement cable has the same compatibility. A compatible USB PD wall charger rated for the stated output may be useful, but follow Sony’s caveat that not all USB PD equipment is guaranteed to work as intended.
Sony’s guide gives an estimate of about one hour of playback after a three-minute charge, or about five hours after a 10-minute charge. The guide separately specifies conditions for a faster, USB PD-assisted three-minute charge; do not assume the quick-charge estimate applies with any adapter or cable. Bose lists up to 2.5 hours of use after a 15-minute low-battery charge for the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) with immersive audio off. That is a conditional quick-charge figure, not a full-charge runtime; Bose says its testing was conducted in April 2025.
These short-charge numbers describe time restored under particular conditions; they are not a comparison of battery capacity or a guarantee that every brief plug-in will deliver the same listening time. Bose’s 2.5-hour estimate is specifically for a low-battery charge with immersive audio off. Keep the model and feature condition attached to the figure when planning a top-up.
If charging is slow
Check that the cable and power source meet the model’s instructions. Sony’s troubleshooting advice for the WH-1000XM5 says to avoid an intervening USB hub when charging from a computer. A faster charger may reduce the time spent waiting for charge, but it cannot repair a battery whose usable runtime has significantly declined.
Also consider the conditions around charging. Sony recommends an ambient temperature of 15–35 °C for efficient charging. If the headphones are not charging as expected, check the basic connection and power source before assuming the battery is defective. Do not extrapolate Sony’s WH-1000XM5 adapter requirements to another brand or model; the exact manufacturer’s guide is the authority for its charging input.
Can I keep listening if the battery runs out?
Some models support wired listening, but the connection and features available depend on the exact headphones. A supplied analog cable is not the same as universal USB-C audio support, and wired playback may not preserve ANC or other powered features.

The WH-1000XM5 can play through its supplied analog headphone cable while switched off, but ANC will not work. Bose says its standard QuietComfort Headphones also support passive listening after depletion, without ANC or Active EQ. For charging while listening, the instructions differ: Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) guide permits it, while Sony says the WH-1000XM5 switches off when charging starts. Check your model’s guide before relying on either behavior.
A wired fallback can be valuable if you need to finish a trip or meeting, but it is not a way to keep every wireless feature when the battery is empty. For the Sony example, the supplied analog headphone cable supports playback with the headphones switched off, but not ANC. Bose’s standard QuietComfort Headphones likewise offer passive listening without ANC or Active EQ after depletion. These examples apply to those named products, not to headphones generally.
Similarly, do not assume that USB-C means a pair can play digital audio over USB-C, or that charging and listening can happen at the same time. Bose’s second-generation Ultra guide allows listening while charging; Sony says the WH-1000XM5 powers off when charging starts. If simultaneous use matters to you, verify it in the exact model’s documentation before relying on it as a fallback.
How should I care for a battery that is losing runtime?
Avoid exposing headphones to extreme temperatures, and do not leave them in a parked vehicle. For long-term storage, Sony advises charging the WH-1000XM5 once every six months to help avoid over-discharge. That is model-specific guidance, not a schedule established here for every rechargeable headphone.
Storage advice is especially relevant if the headphones will sit unused for months. Sony’s six-month recommendation applies to the WH-1000XM5 and is intended to help avoid over-discharge; use the storage instructions for your own model rather than assuming every battery should be maintained on the same schedule. Avoiding temperature extremes is also sensible care, but it does not reverse battery aging.
If the WH-1000XM5’s built-in battery has lost a significant amount of operating time, Sony’s official guide says: “If the usage hours of the built-in rechargeable battery decrease significantly, the battery should be replaced.” Sony advises consulting a Sony dealer. Do not assume a headphone battery is user-replaceable; use the manufacturer’s service guidance for your model.
A noticeable decline that remains after checking settings, idle shutoff and charging is a service question, not an invitation to dismantle a sealed product or buy an unverified third-party replacement. Replacement options and authorized service availability depend on the manufacturer and model. Ear cushions, chargers and software utilities are not established fixes for a degraded battery in the cited guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I change first?
For a practical first pass, match your model’s runtime figure to your codec and ANC setting, then switch off only optional features you do not need. Make sure the headphones are actually powering down when idle, and use the specified cable and compatible charging equipment when topping up. If runtime remains markedly shorter under comparable conditions, seek manufacturer-authorized battery advice.
If your immediate need is more time before the next charge, start with the feature you can most easily do without for that session. Try ANC off when quiet is not necessary, or turn off immersive audio if your model’s manufacturer documents a runtime difference and you do not need the effect. Keep awareness features when safety or convenience calls for them. A short top-up with a supported charger can restore listening time sooner, but it does not make the battery hold more charge in the long term.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning down the volume make wireless headphones last longer?
The manufacturer information cited here does not establish a universal battery-life saving from lowering volume. Any effect can depend on the headphone and listening conditions, so do not rely on a fixed number of extra hours.
Does Bluetooth multipoint reduce headphone battery life?
The WH-1000XM5 guidance cited here does not provide a numerical runtime saving for turning multipoint off. If battery life is a concern, prioritize settings the manufacturer explicitly identifies as affecting operating time.
Can I replace a headphone battery myself?
Do not assume so: the cited Sony guidance recommends consulting a Sony dealer when the WH-1000XM5 battery’s operating time has decreased significantly. Replacement options and service arrangements depend on the specific model and manufacturer.
Does turning ANC off make headphones last longer?
It can on some models, but the size of the difference is model-specific. Sony lists up to 30 hours with ANC on and 40 hours with ANC off for the WH-1000XM5 using AAC; for LDAC, it lists 26 and 36 hours. Treat these as Sony’s published maxima, not a guarantee for your use.
Does Ambient Sound Mode save battery on the WH-1000XM5?
Sony lists the same operating time for Ambient Sound Mode as for ANC on in each cited codec row. Switching from ANC to ambient mode is therefore not a documented runtime-saving step for this model.
Why do my headphones lose charge while they are in a bag?
A wear sensor or automatic shutoff may not behave as expected in storage. Sony warns that WH-1000XM5 wear detection can react incorrectly in a bag; check that automatic power-off is enabled and switch the headphones off manually before packing them away if needed.

It depends on the model and conditions. Sony gives WH-1000XM5 estimates of about one hour of playback after three minutes or about five hours after 10 minutes, with separate conditions for faster USB PD-assisted charging. Bose lists up to 2.5 hours after a 15-minute low-battery charge for the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) with immersive audio off.
Can I use headphones while they are charging?
Check the exact model. Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) guide permits listening while charging, while Sony says the WH-1000XM5 switches off when charging starts.
Can I still listen when the battery is empty?
Some models support wired passive playback. The WH-1000XM5 can play through its supplied analog cable while switched off, but ANC will not work. Bose says its standard QuietComfort Headphones support passive listening after depletion without ANC or Active EQ.
The Bottom Line
Match runtime claims to your exact model, codec and settings; disable only the features you can do without, and make sure the headphones fully power down when idle. Use the manufacturer-specified charging equipment for quicker top-ups. If runtime stays markedly short under comparable conditions, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider about the battery.
