To reduce bird-window collisions, make risky glass visible from the outside: cover it with a dense pattern, screen, or properly installed barrier. A few scattered decals are not enough. Start with windows that reflect trees or sky or have signs of strikes, then address nighttime lighting, indoor plants, and feeder placement.
How do I stop birds from flying into my windows?
Birds may see reflected sky or vegetation as habitat, or mistake clear glass for an open route. Landscaping and indoor lighting can also contribute to risk. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) attributes more than one billion bird-glass collisions annually to the United States; the retrieved agency page does not state the estimate’s publication year or identify its original study year. Find and prioritize risky windows
Look for repeat strikes, feather marks, and glass that reflects trees, plants, or sky. If treating every window at once is impractical, prioritize the windows with the clearest signs of risk. BirdSafe recommends assessing and prioritizing high-risk windows. BirdSafe / FLAP Canada: Preventing Bird Collisions at Home
Make the glass visible from outside
Apply a pattern, film, or physical barrier to the exterior whenever possible. USFWS says outside patterns prevent more collisions than patterns placed inside. Its home-toolkit guidance calls for exterior markers or barriers no more than two inches apart vertically and horizontally, forming a two-by-two-inch grid. Close spacing matters: wide gaps can still look like flight paths. USFWS: Bird-Friendly Home Toolkit

Do bird decals on windows work?
Decals can help when they make the window visibly patterned across the relevant glass. Use a dense, full-window arrangement rather than one or two decorative shapes. The two-inch spacing guidance is a practical benchmark for the pattern; it is not a guarantee that every bird or window will be protected.
Should window decals go inside or outside?
Outside is preferable because it makes the barrier visible before a bird reaches the glass and can reduce misleading reflections. An interior decal may be less effective, so do not assume it provides the same protection as an exterior pattern. Check the product’s instructions and use a treatment suitable for the glass and exposure conditions.

How far apart should bird window stickers be?
USFWS home-toolkit guidance recommends exterior markers or barriers no more than two inches apart, both vertically and horizontally. Apply that spacing across the area at risk, not just around the edges or at eye level.
Which window treatments can reduce collisions?
These are treatment categories, not a like-for-like product test. Their suitability depends on the window, access, desired visibility from indoors, and how durable or removable the treatment needs to be.

| Treatment | How it helps and what to consider |
|---|---|
| Dense decals, tape, or markers | Creates an exterior pattern. Cover the relevant glass with close spacing; scattered markers leave open-looking gaps. |
| Patterned film | Adds a pattern and may preserve some view from indoors. Check placement instructions and ensure the pattern covers the risky area. |
| External insect screen | Can reduce reflections and make a visible barrier. Confirm the screen fits securely over the window. |
| Netting | Can form a physical barrier if installed taut, with openings no larger than one-half inch, and far enough in front of the glass that a bird contacting it cannot continue into the window. |
| Paracord curtain | USFWS describes vertical cords spaced less than four inches apart; Audubon also describes exterior hanging cords as a barrier. Install them outside the glass. |
| Temporary paint or soap pattern | Washable tempera paint and temporary markings are among USFWS-listed options. Follow the close-spacing principle and check compatibility with the glass and local conditions. |
| Patterned, etched, frosted, or fritted glass | Options to consider for replacement windows or new construction. Consult a qualified glazing professional about building-specific choices. |
USFWS describes screens, netting, patterns, and other treatments in its overview of collision threats and home treatments. BirdSafe also provides examples of supplier categories, but those examples should not be taken as endorsement by USFWS or Audubon.
Do hawk stickers keep birds away?
A few hawk silhouettes are not a reliable collision-prevention method. USFWS describes silhouettes as mostly ineffective unless they are used at high density. A dense pattern that makes the glass visible is a better approach than relying on a single predator-shaped decal. USFWS: Window Options—Preventing Bird-Glass Collisions for Building Managers

Where should I put a bird feeder to prevent window collisions?
Audubon advises placing a feeder directly on a window or within three feet of it. At that distance, a startled bird has less room to build speed before reaching the glass. This placement is one part of collision prevention, not a substitute for treating glass that reflects habitat or has a history of strikes. - Reduce unnecessary indoor light that is visible outside at night.
- Close blinds or curtains when useful to reduce the appearance of a clear route through the room.
- Move indoor plants away from risky windows so they do not appear directly behind the glass.
These steps address additional contributors identified by Audubon and USFWS; they complement, rather than replace, a visible exterior treatment.
