Meta has announced a UPI Lite QR-payment feature for AI glasses in India, but describes it as testing and upcoming—not as a feature available to everyone. In Meta’s announced flow, you look at a merchant’s QR code and say “Hey Meta, scan and pay”; the payment is processed through a WhatsApp-linked bank account and is described for amounts below ₹1,000. Check whether the feature is enabled for your glasses and account before relying on it, and verify the payee and amount before authorizing any payment.
What UPI payment with smart glasses means
Meta’s October 14, 2025 announcement, updated May 4, 2026, describes testing UPI Lite QR payments on AI glasses in India. The announced interaction uses the glasses camera to read a QR code after the wearer says “Hey Meta, scan and pay.” Meta says payment is processed through a WhatsApp-linked bank account and describes the test for payments below ₹1,000. These are details of Meta’s announced feature, not an independently verified payment test or a guarantee that it is available on every device or account. Meta’s announcement calls the capability testing and coming soon.
Ray-Ban’s India product page describes Meta AI QR scanning and identifies a camera on Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Its FAQ says the glasses need a smartphone connection and companion app. Those device requirements and camera capabilities do not establish that UPI payments are enabled for every glasses model, bank, app setup, or user. Check availability before trying to pay
Meta’s announcement does not publish a complete list of eligible devices, banks, accounts, or app versions. Confirm within the official Meta and WhatsApp experiences that the payment feature is actually available to you, and follow any eligibility information shown there. Do not assume that buying Ray-Ban Meta glasses or being able to scan a QR code means you can make a UPI payment with them.

The announced glasses pathway uses QR scanning. It is not the same as UPI Tap & Pay: NPCI describes Tap & Pay as a separate NFC-based flow using a compatible mobile device and a UPI app’s Tap & Pay option. NPCI’s overview says that flow can use UPI Lite for amounts up to ₹500 when enabled; that figure applies to Tap & Pay, not to Meta’s glasses feature. How to make a glasses-based UPI payment more safely
- Confirm the feature is enabled. Check the official payment experience for your glasses, phone, Meta/WhatsApp setup, bank, and account. If you cannot find an enabled feature or its instructions, do not treat QR-scanning capability alone as payment access.
- Use a merchant’s legitimate payment QR. Scan only when you intend to pay a merchant who accepts UPI. Do not act on an unsolicited QR code or payment link promising a refund, cashback, or incoming money.
- Invoke the announced command only within the enabled feature. Meta’s public description gives the voice command “Hey Meta, scan and pay.” Follow the official prompts presented by the feature rather than instructions from a stranger.
- Check the recipient and amount before authorizing. Make sure the payee is the merchant you intend to pay and the amount is correct. Stop if either detail is missing, unexpected, or difficult to verify. NPCI’s QR-payment instructions say to review payment details before entering a PIN and authorizing. - Use only the authentication step shown by the official payment flow. Meta’s announcement does not specify every authentication screen or security control. Never disclose your UPI PIN to another person, say it aloud, or enter it to receive money.
- Check the result in your payment app or account. Confirm the payment status and retain its transaction reference so you can follow up if something goes wrong.

A QR code and PIN are for paying, not receiving
NPCI warns that “scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is only meant for making payments, not receiving them.” Treat a request to scan a code and enter your PIN to get money, a refund, or a prize as a fraud signal. Never share your UPI PIN. NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance.

Review before you authorize
UPI payments are authorized by the account holder; the glasses do not make a questionable recipient or amount safe. Verify the details presented by the payment flow and cancel if they do not match your purchase. NPCI says a payment already initiated cannot be stopped. - Meta’s public description does not establish general availability or provide a complete supported-device, bank, account, or app-version matrix.
- The announcement does not fully describe the authentication screens or all security controls, so do not assume how PIN entry or other authorization works on glasses.
- The below-₹1,000 scope is Meta’s description of its UPI Lite glasses test, not evidence that all users can make payments at that amount.
- UPI Tap & Pay’s NFC instructions do not show that glasses can make NFC payments.
