For a simple standing fall tree, use an empty toilet paper tube as the trunk and base, then slot a painted cardboard canopy into two cuts at the top. You can draw the canopy yourself or use a printable template; an adult can prepare the cutting while kids paint and assemble.

Make the standing cardboard-canopy tree
Gather a few basic supplies
- One empty toilet paper tube
- Light cardboard, such as a cereal box
- Scissors and a pencil
- A tree-canopy template, if desired
- Red, orange, yellow, and brown paint; green is optional
This version needs no dedicated craft kit. The tube and cereal-box cardboard are reused materials. Washable tempera or children’s craft paint is an optional choice; the instructions use paint but do not evaluate a particular product or brand.
Cut, paint, and assemble
- Draw or print the canopy. Use a printable template or draw a simple treetop shape on lightweight cardboard.
- Cut out the canopy. An adult can cut it out for a child who needs help with scissors.
- Dab on fall colors. Let the child use fingertips to add red, orange, yellow, brown, and optionally green paint.
- Let the paint dry. Wait until the canopy is dry before fitting it into the tube.
- Cut two opposing slits. Make two cuts about an inch long at one end of the tube.
- Fit the canopy into the tube. Slide its lower edge into the slits so the cardboard becomes the treetop and the tube acts as the trunk and base. Check whether the tree stands upright.
The instructions do not give a specific fix if the assembled tree tips, so avoid assuming that one adjustment will work for every canopy or tube.

Try a printed canopy or flat leaf-stamping picture
Make a shaving-cream printed tree
Kids Activity Zone’s tutorial, published October 16, 2024, makes a marbled canopy print on cardstock. Spread shaving cream on a tray, swirl in food coloring, press a canopy-shaped piece of cardstock onto the surface, then lift it and scrape away excess. Let the print dry before cutting around the canopy and attaching it to the tube. The author estimates 30 minutes for drying and one hour ten minutes for the full project; those are that tutorial’s estimates, not guaranteed times for other materials or conditions.
The tutorial allows craft glue instead of a hot glue gun and suggests glue dots or double-sided tape as alternatives. It also proposes dabbing acrylic paint with a cotton ball instead of using shaving cream. This method adds a printing and drying stage compared with painting a cardboard canopy directly.

Stamp leaves on a flat tree picture
For a two-dimensional result, Crafty Morning’s tutorial cuts an empty toilet paper roll to form a leaf-shaped stamp. Children stamp paint around a printed tree sheet; a small brush can fill in leaves, and extra stamped leaves can go at the bottom as fallen leaves. The tutorial says younger children may need help cutting the tube.
Prepare the cutting and assembly to suit the child
Craft tutorials describe activities, not formal safety standards or age assessments. Crafty Morning notes that younger children may need assistance cutting the tube, while Kids Activity Zone recommends safety scissors for young children cutting its cardstock shapes. For the slotted-canopy version, an adult can cut the canopy and tube slits ahead of time, leaving painting and fitting for the child. A hot glue gun is not necessary for the printed-canopy version described above, which offers other attachment options.

Build a more layered paper tree
Education.com describes a more involved variation for grades one and two. Paint the tube brown for the trunk, roll brown paper into a cone, and glue folded paper leaves onto it. Attach the cone to the tube, then glue the tube to a foam base. The listed supplies are brown, orange, red, and yellow construction paper, brown tempera paint, white glue, scissors, and a stapler. This version creates a layered canopy without using a printable template.
