To reduce battery use from iPhone Always-On Display, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display and turn it off. To keep the display glanceable, leave it on and disable Show Wallpaper, Show Notifications, or both. Apple does not publish a quantified estimate of the battery saved by any of these changes.
Choose how much of Always-On Display you want to keep
Always-On Display is designed to dim when the iPhone is idle and minimize on-screen motion; it does not leave the normal bright Lock Screen on continuously. Apple describes the feature as providing glanceable information in a low-power, privacy-preserving way. That design does not mean it uses no battery, but Apple’s guidance gives no percentage or hours estimate for savings from disabling it or hiding Lock Screen content.
Apple’s control and feature details are in Keep the iPhone display on longer. Hiding wallpaper or notifications may suit you if you want glanceable information without showing all Lock Screen content, but Apple does not quantify the battery difference between these options.
Hide wallpaper or notifications while keeping the feature
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness, then Always On Display.
- Turn off Show Wallpaper, Show Notifications, or both.
These controls change what appears on the dimmed display. Choose based on the information you want available at a glance; there is no published figure that establishes how much either change saves.

Turn off Always-On Display
- Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display.
- Switch Always On Display off.
This is the most direct setting to change if you do not need the Lock Screen visible while the phone is locked. The setting is available on supported iPhone models; Apple’s guide covers the feature and its controls.
Use Low Power Mode for broader savings
Low Power Mode automatically turns Always-On Display off and also reduces other power use. Its settings path depends on iPhone generation:

- iPhone 15 and later: Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
Apple also documents enabling it through Control Center or Siri. Low Power Mode turns off automatically when the iPhone charges to 80% or higher. For the full list of effects, see Use Low Power Mode to save battery life on your iPhone or iPad.
What you trade off
Low Power Mode is not limited to the display. Apple says it can reduce display brightness, set Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, disable some visual effects and Background App Refresh, pause iCloud Photos, and turn off automatic downloads and email fetch. On ProMotion models, it limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second. Some tasks may take longer and background features may be limited.

Check Adaptive Power if your iPhone supports it
Adaptive Power can make performance adjustments, slightly lower screen brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode when battery reaches 20% on supported devices. Availability and default behavior vary by model. Check Settings > Battery > Power Mode and Apple’s current Adaptive Power guidance for your iPhone rather than assuming the option is available.

- The iPhone is face down or obstructed from view.
- The iPhone is away from a paired Apple Watch.
- A CarPlay session begins or Continuity Camera is in use.
- Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is on.
- The user’s usual bedtime occurs.
These are expected behaviors, not by themselves signs of a display fault. Apple lists them in its Always-On Display guidance.
If battery drain continues, check battery usage and health
If battery life remains poor after changing the display setting, review the Battery screen’s usage information and check Battery Health. Apple advises considering battery replacement if Battery Health shows Service, following the on-screen instructions. Drain that persists is not proof that Always-On Display is responsible; other software, hardware, and usage factors can contribute. See If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly.
