You can write questions manually, import existing material, or use one of Kahoot!’s available generation tools. After that, host it live with a game PIN or QR code, or use a remote meeting platform.
This guide covers the current Kahoot! web interface, including the settings that affect question visibility, joining, scoring, audio, security, and participant limits.
How to create a Kahoot quiz
- Go to Kahoot.com and log in.
- Click Create in the top navigation bar.
- Select Kahoot.
- Use the left-hand sidebar to add and organize questions.
The editor lets you create a game from scratch or bring in existing content. Depending on your account or workspace, the available options may include:
- Generate with AI
- Import from PDF
- Google Slides
- PowerPoint
- Copy from other kahoots
- Import slides or quiz questions from a spreadsheet
Some import tools, question types, and features require a paid plan. If an option is missing from your editor, it may not be included with your account rather than being a browser problem.

Add questions and answers
- Click Add question in the left-side panel.
- Choose a question type, such as Quiz, True/False, Poll, or Word cloud.
- Enter the question text.
- Add the answer choices, where the selected question type requires them.
- Mark the correct answer or answers for scored question types.
- Optionally add an image, GIF, or video.
A standard Quiz question is suitable when participants must choose one or more correct answers. Use True/False for a binary answer. Poll and Word cloud are useful for collecting opinions or opening a discussion, but they do not work like ordinary right-or-wrong questions.
Kahoot displays warning or exclamation indicators when required information is missing or a character limit has been exceeded. Check those indicators before leaving the editor. According to Kahoot Support, a Kahoot can contain up to 200 questions.
Organize the question list
- Drag questions up or down in the left panel to change their order.
- Click the duplication icon to copy a question.
- Click the trash icon to delete a question.
Duplicating a question is useful when several questions share the same answer structure. Edit the copied question afterward so you do not accidentally leave duplicate wording or the wrong correct answer.
Edit the Kahoot title and settings
In the creator, click the Kahoot’s title or click Settings at the top. Depending on your account, settings are grouped into:

You can edit the title, description, cover image, visibility, language, and other metadata. According to Kahoot Support, the current limits and image requirements are:

Allow duplication lets other users copy and modify your Kahoot. Turn it off if you want to prevent people from making their own versions. Allow guest hosting lets someone host the Kahoot without a registered Kahoot! account.
The language setting does not translate your questions or answers. It affects the interface and search metadata only, so translate the game content yourself before publishing it for another language audience.

Preview and test the Kahoot
Do not wait until the live session to discover that an answer is missing or a timer is too short.
- Open the Kahoot in the creator.
- Click Preview in the top-right corner.
- Review both Host view and Participant view.
- Click Launch demo in the bottom-right corner of Preview.
The demo lobby gives you both a host view and a participant view. Test the PIN process, question display, answer choices, timers, transitions, scoring, and results. You can also launch a demo from the Kahoot details page by clicking the ⋮ Options button and choosing Launch demo.
During testing, pay particular attention to:
- Whether every scored question has at least one correct answer.
- Whether images, videos, and GIFs load properly.
- Whether the timer allows enough time to read the question.
- Whether the correct answer is actually marked correctly.
- Whether questions that depend on a fixed sequence still appear in the intended order.
- Whether the participant view is readable on a phone.
How to host a Kahoot live
- Open the Kahoot from Library or Discover.
- Click Host live.
- Choose an available experience or game mode.
- Show the host screen to participants.
- Have players join using the displayed PIN, QR code, or direct join link.
- When everyone is ready, click Start.
The host screen displays a game PIN and QR code. Participants can join at kahoot.it, through the Kahoot! mobile app, or by scanning the QR code. You can share the direct join link or enlarge the QR code from the host screen.
Do not publish the game PIN on social media. Anyone who obtains it may join, including unwanted participants or bots.
Available live experiences
The host screen uses the terms experience and game mode. Available choices appear in a carousel at the bottom of the screen and depend on your account and subscription. Current options include:

Players may join after a game has started in Classic, Lecture, or Professional, as long as the game is not locked and the PIN remains available.
Configure live-game settings
Click the gear wheel in the bottom-right corner of the host screen to open live-game settings. Some choices can be changed before selecting an experience, in the lobby, between questions, or during gameplay. Kahoot saves settings for the next hosting session, so review them rather than assuming each new game starts with defaults.

| End kahoot | Ends the game and takes the host to the podium before all questions are played. |
Show questions & answers is free for all Kahoot! users and works across live experiences. It is useful when participants are remote or cannot clearly see the host’s shared screen. It does not move the scoreboard or correct-answer display to participant devices; those remain on the host screen.
If you use answer randomization, check the wording of questions that refer to an answer’s position. Kahoot does not automatically label answer choices A, B, C, and D. If letters are needed, type labels such as a), b), c), and d) directly into the answer fields.
Deal with players who disconnect
A disconnected participant can return through kahoot.it or the app:
- Join the game again.
- Select Tap to rejoin game.
- Choose Resume as [nickname].
Joining with a new nickname creates a new player and resets the previous score. Tell participants to resume their original nickname whenever possible.
Host Kahoot remotely
Kahoot recommends its integrations for Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and RingCentral Events (Hopin). You can also use another video-conferencing service with screen sharing.
- Log in to Kahoot and find the game.
- Connect or open the video-conferencing tool.
- Start a live Kahoot.
- Enable Show questions & answers, preferably.
- Share the host screen in the meeting.
- Ask participants to join with the PIN, QR code, or link.
Timer music can interfere with spoken explanations during remote sessions. Wait until answers have been submitted before speaking, or lower or mute the game music.
Lobby video, music, and audio restrictions
You may see a Lobby video field where a YouTube URL can play as a full-screen background while participants join. YouTube lobby videos are no longer supported for Business and Social users.

For those accounts, Kahoot’s documented workaround is:
- Add a slide as the first item in the Kahoot.
- Upload a video from your device or use a Vimeo video on that slide.
- Host using Professional or Lecture.
The video appears in the lobby and must be started manually. Kahoot does not support custom audio uploads. You can select from the built-in lobby music list. If there is no lobby video, adjust the music volume with the volume button on the right side of the host screen.

There is no single free-account limit. The maximum depends on the account category, subscription, and whether you use a live Present session or an Assign session. The limits below are from Kahoot Support’s participant-limit guide.

Kahoot! 360 live limits currently range from 50 participants on 360 Pro Start to 5,000 on 360 Pro Ultra. One-time Event plans range from 200 on Event Standard to 5,000 on Event Ultra.
Kahoot! 360 Express allows 15 players per created game and limits each live session to 15 minutes. Free Business users may be limited to three players for games they create, while selected Discover or Free Resources games can have different limits.
Check the limit shown in your account before planning a large event. The often-repeated claim that every free Kahoot account supports 50 players is not correct.
Quick pre-host checklist
- Confirm every question has complete text and answer choices.
- Check the correct answer markers.
- Preview Host view and Participant view.
- Run Launch demo if the quiz is important or includes media.
- Choose the experience that suits the activity.
- Enable Show questions & answers for remote or device-first play.
- Decide whether to randomize questions or answers.
- Enable 2-Step Join if you want an additional barrier against unwanted players.
- Keep the PIN private and share it only with the intended group.
- Check your participant allowance before opening the lobby.
FAQ
Can I make a Kahoot for free?
Yes, but free-account capabilities and participant limits vary. Kahoot! Go currently allows 10 participants for personal Present sessions and 40 for K–12 teacher Present sessions, according to Kahoot Support. Some question types, imports, and features require a paid plan.

Do participants need a Kahoot account?
Participants can generally join with the game PIN through kahoot.it or the mobile app. The host can also enable Allow guest hosting so someone can host the Kahoot without a registered Kahoot! account.
Can players see the questions on their own phones?
Yes. Open live-game settings with the gear wheel and enable Show questions & answers. The question and choices appear on participant devices, while the scoreboard and correct-answer display remain on the host screen.
Can I randomize Kahoot questions?

A YouTube URL can be used in the Lobby video field for supported accounts, but YouTube lobby videos are no longer supported for Business and Social users. Those users can add a first slide with an uploaded or Vimeo video and host with Professional or Lecture.
