To open Gemini with your Android phone’s existing assistant button or gesture, set Gemini as the Google assistant experience and make sure the Google app is selected as the device’s Digital assistant app. Then use the assistant shortcut your device supports, such as holding the power button, holding Home, or swiping up from a bottom corner. Settings names and available shortcuts vary by device.
Before you start: check the default digital assistant app
Open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app and check the selection. Google says the Google app should be selected for Gemini to work as the primary mobile assistant. If it is not, choose Google in the device’s digital assistant options. The exact labels and menu location may vary by Android device. See Google’s Gemini Android setup instructions.
Switch from Google Assistant to Gemini
Google documents two ways to choose Gemini. Use whichever route appears on your device, then follow the on-screen setup. If you have not used Gemini before, Google says to download the Gemini app.
- From the Google app: Open the Google app, tap your profile picture, then go to Settings > Google Assistant > Digital assistants from Google > Gemini.
- From Android Settings: Open Settings > Apps > Assistant > Digital assistants from Google > Gemini.
Some devices may already use Gemini as the primary assistant. On other eligible devices, you may be able to switch after a notification or by downloading the app. If the documented menus do not match yours, search Settings for “assistant” or “digital assistant.” Availability depends on your device, account, language, and location; some features are also unavailable for certain work or school accounts and supervised accounts. Use your phone’s assistant button or gesture
Once Gemini is selected, invoke it using the assistant method your device supports. Google lists these touch methods, but not every phone offers all of them:
- Power button: Press and hold the power button if your device assigns that action to the assistant.
- Home button: Press and hold Home on devices with a Home button or an equivalent on-screen control.
- Screen gesture: Swipe up from a bottom corner of the screen on devices configured for that assistant gesture.
These are device-dependent options, not interchangeable settings guaranteed to exist on every Android phone. Google’s Android Gemini help describes the possible touch activation methods.

If holding the power button does something else
On some devices, a long press on Power opens the power menu rather than the assistant. If your phone exposes the option, look for Settings > System > Gestures > Press & hold power button and select Digital assistant. This assigns the hold action to the default digital assistant app. If that path is missing, search Settings for “power,” “side button,” or “gesture”; manufacturers use different menu names and may not offer the same control. Pixel-specific power-button example
These details apply to supported Pixel phones, not Android phones generally: Google says Pixel 6 and later, including Fold, use press-and-hold Power for Assistant. Pixel 4a and later, including Fold running Android 12 or later, can configure the power-button action at Settings > System > Gestures > Press and hold the Power button. See Google Pixel Phone Help.

If the shortcut still opens the wrong assistant
- Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app.
- Select the intended assistant option. Google says to select Google when using either Google Assistant or Gemini as the default digital assistant app.
- Try the assistant button or gesture again. If it still behaves differently, search Settings for “assistant” and review the device-specific button or gesture action.
