To make player characters use the classic six-part R6 body in Roblox Studio, change the experience’s avatar type—not just the rig visible in the workspace. Open File → Avatar Settings, click the ⋯ menu in the window’s top bar, and select R6. You can also open Avatar Settings from the Avatar tab.

You can insert a separate R6 rig for an NPC, animation, or testing, but that model does not change the avatar type used by players.

Make the game use R6 avatars

  1. Open the experience in Roblox Studio.
  2. Choose File → Avatar Settings, or open the same window from the Avatar tab.
  3. In the top bar of the Avatar Settings window, click the ⋯ menu.
  4. Select R6. The available choices are R6, R15, and R15 & R6.
  5. Optionally click Preview to inspect representative R6 avatars.
  6. Start a Studio playtest and confirm that the player actually spawns as R6.

The setting applies to player character models globally across the game; it is not limited to the place model currently selected in the 3D viewport. See Roblox’s Avatar Settings documentation and character appearance documentation.

Preview the result

The Preview button in Avatar Settings creates temporary preview content at Workspace > Camera > AvatarPreview. This lets you inspect the selected avatar type before testing the game.

Do not treat that folder as part of your game. Roblox removes it during runtime playtesting, and it is not saved to the place. See the Avatar Settings documentation.

Insert an R6 rig into the workspace

Use the Rig Generator when you need an R6 model for an NPC, animation, scripting tests, or custom character work.

  1. Open either the Avatar tab or the Home tab on the Studio toolbar.
  2. Click Character.
  3. Choose an R6 rig in the popup.
  4. Select Masculine or Feminine.
  5. Click one of the available style buttons.

Studio inserts the model into the 3D viewport and adds it to Explorer with the name Rig. For details, see Roblox’s Rig Generator documentation.

Action What it changes
Avatar Settings → R6 The avatar type used by players across the game
Avatar/Home → Character → R6 A separate R6 model inserted into the current place

Inserting a Rig does not switch player spawning to R6. You must set the game-wide option in Avatar Settings as well.

What an R6 character contains

R6 is the legacy Roblox body type with six visible body parts:

  • Head
  • Torso
  • Left Arm
  • Right Arm
  • Left Leg
  • Right Leg

A working character also includes supporting objects such as a Humanoid, HumanoidRootPart, joints, appearance objects, and scripts. Therefore, “six-part rig” does not mean the entire character model contains only six objects. Roblox describes the R6 rig in its Rig Generator documentation.

The Head must be attached to a body part named Torso. An R6 Humanoid without the required Torso connection can die immediately. The character also needs a normal HumanoidRootPart, the primary movement-driving part for a Humanoid assembly. See the Humanoid reference.

Check whether a character is R6 with Lua

Use Humanoid.RigType to inspect a character after it spawns:

local humanoid = character:FindFirstChildOfClass(“Humanoid”)

if humanoid and humanoid.RigType == Enum.HumanoidRigType.R6 then

print(“R6 character”)

end

In a character-related server script, character should refer to the player’s current character model. The comparison uses the enum value Enum.HumanoidRigType.R6. See Roblox’s Humanoid reference.

Do not convert a rig by changing RigType

This is not an R15-to-R6 conversion command:

humanoid.RigType = Enum.HumanoidRigType.R6

Changing the property does not create the missing R6 body parts, joints, or appearance structure. If an R15 model is marked as R6, the Humanoid can malfunction or die because the model does not have the required Torso connection to Head.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Avatar Settings for player avatars, or generate an actual R6 rig with the Character tool.

R6 clothing and customization limits

R6 supports classic avatar appearance systems, including:

  • Shirt
  • Pants
  • ShirtGraphic

R6 does not provide the same layered-clothing behavior as R15. Layered clothing and other layerable accessories are supported on R15 models through the Rig Generator workflow. If your game must use R6, plan around classic clothing and compatible accessories. See Roblox’s Rig Generator documentation and appearance documentation.

HumanoidDescription body-scale values for height, width, head, body type, and proportion do not affect R6 body types. If you change those values and the R6 character does not resize, that is expected behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented R6 body-part fields in HumanoidDescription are:

Face, Head, Torso, RightArm, LeftArm, RightLeg, LeftLeg

See the character appearance documentation.

R6 compared with R15

The Rig Generator describes R6 as a legacy rig with six mesh objects. R15 has 15 mesh objects and supports a substantially larger range of motion.

Feature R6 R15
Visible body structure Six body parts Fifteen body parts
Classic clothing Supported Supported
Layered clothing Not supported in the same way Supported
Body scale values Do not affect the R6 body type Used by the R15 appearance system
Motion range More limited Substantially larger

Troubleshoot R6 not working

The game still spawns R15

Return to File → Avatar Settings → ⋯ and verify that R6, rather than R15 or R15 & R6, is selected. Then stop and restart the Studio playtest. A rig inserted into the workspace does not determine the player’s avatar type.

The inserted rig is R6, but players are not

This is normal if you only used the Character tool. The generated Rig is an independent model for building, animation, NPC, or testing purposes. Set the global option in Avatar Settings to change player characters.

The character dies immediately

Check for a rig mismatch. An R15 model labeled as R6 commonly fails because it lacks a connected Torso and Head arrangement. If you are building a custom R6 model, verify that it has the expected six body parts, a properly configured Humanoid, the required joints, and a HumanoidRootPart. See the Humanoid reference.

Body scaling has no visible effect

HumanoidDescription scale values for height, width, head, body type, and proportion do not affect R6 body types. Use an appropriate R6 body-part or character design instead of relying on R15 scale properties.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Layered clothing is missing

Layerable clothing and layerable accessories require R15 models in the Rig Generator workflow. For an R6-only game, use classic shirts, pants, shirt graphics, and compatible accessories.

Preview objects disappear during playtest

This is expected. Workspace > Camera > AvatarPreview is temporary preview content. Roblox removes it during runtime playtesting and does not save it to the place.

Different places or team members show different behavior

Avatar Settings changes underlying game defaults that are not exposed outside the settings interface or through scripts. When several people work across multiple place files, record the intended avatar setting and verify each place in Studio. Roblox warns this can make team behavior difficult to debug; see the Avatar Settings documentation.

Recommended verification checklist

  1. Set File → Avatar Settings → ⋯ → R6.
  2. Use Preview to inspect representative avatars.
  3. Start a fresh Studio playtest.
  4. Inspect the spawned character and confirm that it has a six-part R6 structure.
  5. Use humanoid.RigType == Enum.HumanoidRigType.R6 if a script needs to validate the rig.
  6. Test classic clothing and any character scripts with an actual spawned player.
  7. If you inserted a separate Rig, remember that it does not control player spawning.

FAQ

How do I make my Roblox game R6?

In Roblox Studio, open File → Avatar Settings, click the ⋯ menu in the window’s top bar, and select R6. Run a playtest afterward to verify the player spawn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does inserting an R6 rig make the whole game R6?

No. The Character tool inserts a separate model named Rig. It is useful for NPCs, animation, and testing, while player avatar behavior is controlled by Avatar Settings.

Can I turn an R15 model into R6 with a script?

No. Setting Humanoid.RigType to Enum.HumanoidRigType.R6 does not add the required R6 parts. A mismatch can cause the Humanoid to die.

Can R6 use layered clothing?

No. Layered clothing and other layerable accessories are supported on R15 models in the Rig Generator workflow. R6 games should use classic clothing and compatible accessories.

Why does my R6 character die when it spawns?

The model may be marked R6 without having the required R6 structure. Check that Head is connected to a part named Torso, and that the character has a properly configured Humanoid and HumanoidRootPart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do R6 body-scale settings do nothing?

HumanoidDescription scale values for height, width, head, body type, and proportion do not affect R6 body types.

The Bottom Line

For player avatars, use File → Avatar Settings → ⋯ → R6. Use the Character tool only when you need a separate R6 rig for an NPC, animation, or testing. Do not try to convert an R15 model by changing Humanoid.RigType; use a correctly generated or correctly structured R6 character instead.
