Yes—DIY light panels can work with Home Assistant when a supported controller runs the LEDs. For common addressable strips, the most direct route is an ESP32 running WLED: connect it to your network, add it to Home Assistant, and control the panel through the resulting light entity. ESPHome is a good alternative if you already use it or need custom device behavior.
Choose WLED or ESPHome
Both options can connect a DIY panel to Home Assistant, but they suit different builds. These are documented capabilities, not claims about measured performance.

For a typical pixel-based panel, WLED is a practical starting point. Choose ESPHome when its configurable components better match the rest of your smart-home setup.
Build around compatible LEDs and a controller
WLED’s integration documentation requires WLED 0.14.0 or newer and says official WLED releases for ESP8266 and ESP32 are fully supported. The WLED setup guide recommends ESP32 for a new project. Before selecting a strip, verify its chipset, voltage, pixel density, length, and whether you need a dedicated white channel; the controller and firmware must support the combination you choose.

For example, a WS2812B addressable LED strip is one documented chipset option for a WLED panel. That does not establish that every WS2812B listing, voltage, or strip density is right for your design. Match the strip to the controller and your physical layout.
Connect a WLED panel to Home Assistant
- Select the LED type and board. Confirm the chipset is supported by your chosen firmware and follow the board and strip guidance. WLED describes basic digital-strip connections as power, data, and ground; analog strips use a channel for each color. See the WLED Getting Started Guide.
- Install and configure WLED. Set up WLED on a compatible ESP board and connect the LEDs according to the selected chipset and board instructions.
- Connect the controller to your home network. Give the device a reliable network connection so Home Assistant can reach it.
- Add the WLED device. Home Assistant may discover it automatically. If it does not, open Settings > Devices & services, add the WLED integration, and enter the device hostname or IP address. Check the current Home Assistant WLED integration documentation for supported versions and details.
- Control the panel with its light entity. Use the entity for on/off, brightness, color, and supported effects. If you want separately controlled regions, configure WLED segments and use those controls in Home Assistant.
Use segments for separately controlled panel regions
A single physical LED run does not have to behave as one indivisible light. WLED can divide a strip into segments that can be controlled separately in WLED and Home Assistant. This can suit a panel with distinct zones, provided the pixel mapping and segment boundaries match the physical layout. Segmenting a run does not, by itself, change its wiring or electrical requirements.

Connect an ESPHome light instead
With ESPHome, configure a supported light component for your chosen LEDs and connect the device to Home Assistant through ESPHome’s native API. The component documentation describes capabilities including colors, transitions, and effects, and covers addressable-light configurations.
- Define the device and light in ESPHome. Use the component and configuration appropriate to the LED hardware.
- Connect it to Home Assistant. Devices can be discovered or added manually by hostname or IP address. The ESPHome integration documents the default API port as 6053 and notes that unique device names help reliable discovery and reconnection.
- Check the resulting controls. Confirm that the light modes and effects exposed by your chosen component match what you want to automate.

Plan power and color behavior for the actual build
There is no universal power-supply rating for a DIY panel. The required supply depends on the selected strip, LED count, wiring plan, and operating conditions. Choose a regulated supply for the exact hardware and verify its requirements against the strip and controller documentation; the information in the panel title alone is not enough to specify voltage, current, or wattage.
- Determine the strip’s voltage and the total number of LEDs before selecting a supply.
- Plan wiring for the panel’s physical layout and follow the component documentation for power and data connections.
- Check the desired color and white-light behavior. Some analog RGB+CCT or digital RGBCCT arrangements do not offer separate color and color-temperature sliders in Home Assistant; the integration may manage one color model at a time.
- Confirm that the firmware, chipset, effects, and segment arrangement expose the controls your automations need.
Home Assistant compatibility means the controller can be integrated; it does not guarantee identical effects, color modes, or segmentation for every LED type and configuration. The WLED integration page lists supported chipsets and documents the color-mode caveat.
