Claude Code and Codex do not automatically share a live conversation or message each other when you run them as separate tools. The dependable way to collaborate is to share the Git repository and pass an explicit handoff note; if you use VS Code, its agent handoff can also carry conversation history and context between Claude and Codex.

What “talk to each other” can mean

There are two different goals: moving a task from one coding agent to another, and continuing work from a different computer. A repository and handoff note solve the durable-state problem: the next agent can see the code, decisions, and next steps. VS Code offers a more direct conversation handoff between supported agent harnesses. Neither should be mistaken for a general native chat bridge between independent Claude Code and Codex sessions.

Anthropic’s documentation describes Claude Code sessions as stored locally per project directory, not shared with teammates or visible in a dashboard by default. Its recommendation to check project setup in .claude/ helps share instructions and configuration, not the live session.

Choose a handoff method

Approach Conversation context Where code runs and how files are shared Important constraint
Git repository plus handoff note The note carries selected context; it does not transfer chat history automatically. Both computers access the same remote repository. The receiving agent works from the checkout and branch it inspects. Commit or push the needed work, and state what remains. This is a practical workflow, not an automatic vendor feature.
VS Code agent handoff VS Code says handoff carries conversation history and context when switching harnesses. Sessions can run on your machine against the current folder or an isolated Git worktree. The destination harness may have different tools, permissions, and models. See VS Code’s handoff documentation and supported harnesses.
Claude remote-control or teleport Provides continuity for a Claude session, not a Claude-to-Codex conversation transfer. Remote control reaches a local Claude session; teleport continues a cloud session on another machine. Availability depends on plan and CLI version. It is not cross-vendor interoperability; see Anthropic’s remote-control documentation.
VS Code Cloud target Not described as a transfer of a local live session. Runs on provider infrastructure against a GitHub repository and returns a branch and pull request. It cannot access VS Code built-in tools or local runtime context. Details are in VS Code’s agents overview.

Set up a reliable cross-computer workflow

  1. Put the project in a Git remote both computers can access. Before switching machines, commit or push the changes the next session needs. On the second computer, fetch the latest branch and inspect its status and diff before editing.
  2. Share stable project instructions. Keep reusable guidance in repository files. For Claude Code, Anthropic specifically recommends sharing the project’s .claude/ setup. Do not commit credentials or machine-specific authentication; configure those separately on each computer.
  3. Write a short handoff note. Put it in the repository or task tracker. Include the goal, decisions already made, files changed, checks run and their results, unresolved questions, and the exact next action. This note is the portable record of work, not a copied live conversation.
  4. Have the receiving agent verify before it acts. Ask it to summarize its understanding, inspect the current branch and working-tree diff, and identify anything the note leaves uncertain. This catches stale notes and unpushed edits before they become conflicting work.
  5. Use VS Code handoff when retaining chat context matters. Select Claude or Codex as the destination target and use the handoff flow when available. VS Code says it carries history and context, but confirm that the destination has the tools and permissions needed for the next step.

Use VS Code to switch between Claude and Codex

VS Code documents Anthropic Claude and OpenAI Codex as supported agent harnesses. Its handoff feature continues ongoing work with a different agent configuration and carries conversation history and context. That is the most direct documented option here for passing an active task between these harnesses in one interface.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Handoff is not a guarantee that both agents behave identically. Models, available tools, and permissions can differ after the switch, so review the receiving agent’s access before asking it to run commands or change files. You can also work against an isolated Git worktree rather than the current folder; check which location the session is using so you know which edits you are reviewing.

Continue Claude Code on another device

Anthropic documents claude --teleport and /teleport for continuing a cloud session on a machine, and /remote-control for controlling a local session from a phone or web browser. The documentation lists claude remote-control as available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise with CLI version 2.1.51 or later. Confirm the current plan and version requirements in Anthropic’s documentation, since availability can change. These are Claude-specific continuity features; they do not make Codex part of the same session.

Avoid conflicting writes to Codex sessions

VS Code can discover local sessions created by Claude Code and Codex. For an external Codex chat, VS Code documents a single-writer restriction: close the other application before continuing that session in VS Code. Do not leave both applications writing to the same external Codex session at once. See the external-session guidance.

Where MCP fits—and where it does not

Claude Code can connect to external tools through MCP. Anthropic’s FAQ describes adding a project-level .mcp.json or running claude mcp add, then restarting Claude and checking the server with /mcp. That can connect Claude to tools you deliberately configure; the documentation does not say MCP alone creates a chat bridge to Codex. Treat a custom integration as a separate project, not as a built-in feature.
