A practical lunch can include fruit or vegetables, a grain, and a protein food; add dairy or a suitable alternative when it fits your child’s needs. Keep perishable cold food cold and hot food hot, and adapt the plan for allergies, school rules, and your family’s food practices.
What makes a school lunch balanced?
Use the USDA’s Real Food Guide to School Lunch for ideas across food categories. Mix and match foods your child is likely to eat rather than treating any one combination as mandatory.
- Fruit or vegetables: choose a familiar fruit, cut vegetables, or another option your child accepts.
- Grain: consider whole-grain bread or crackers, rice, or pasta.
- Protein: beans, egg, poultry, fish, tofu, or another suitable choice can work.
- Dairy or an alternative: yogurt, cheese, or an appropriate alternative may fit, depending on the child’s needs.
These are category ideas, not a formula that guarantees a particular child’s nutritional needs are met. Account for allergies, medical dietary needs, cultural or religious practices, and school restrictions when choosing foods.
School meal standards are not home-lunch portion targets
The USDA’s National School Lunch Program meal pattern sets requirements for participating schools, including food components and daily-average calorie ranges. Its listed ranges are 550–650 kcal for grades K–5, 600–700 kcal for grades 6–8, and 750–850 kcal for grades 9–12. These are program standards, not calorie goals or portion prescriptions for an individual child’s packed lunch. The USDA notes that some sodium limits and added-sugar requirements have implementation timelines; consult its current school nutrition standards for regulatory details.

How can you make lunch more appealing to a picky eater?
Keep a familiar food in the lunch and offer a small amount of a less familiar food alongside it. The CDC says, “Children may need to try some foods many times before they like them.” A refusal today does not establish that a child will never accept that food; try again on another occasion without pressure.
Invite your child to choose between suitable options—for example, two fruits or two sandwich fillings. You can also tailor practical details such as texture, temperature, shape, or packaging to the child’s preferences. These are ways to make choices more workable, not guarantees that a child will eat more.

For school meal programs, the USDA identifies practices such as student choice, taste tests, salad bars, farm-to-school activities, share tables, student advisory committees, and nutrition education as options schools can consider to support meal consumption and reduce waste. Families can adapt the general idea by involving a child in choosing lunch foods, but no single tactic guarantees acceptance.
How do you keep a packed lunch at a safe temperature?
For a cold lunch
For perishable foods such as meat, eggs, cheese, or yogurt, USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance recommends a soft-sided insulated lunch bag and at least two cold sources. Its examples are two frozen gel packs at least 5 by 3 inches each, or one gel pack together with a frozen juice box or water bottle. Place cold sources above and below the perishable food. If the school has a refrigerator, put the lunch there when your child arrives.

For a hot lunch
Use a clean insulated container for foods such as soup, chili, or stew. FSIS recommends preheating it with boiling water for a few minutes, emptying it, adding piping-hot food, and keeping the container closed until lunch. The aim is to keep the food at 140°F or above. An insulated container alone does not ensure safe handling, so follow the full FSIS lunch-packing guidance.

There is no universal winner. Choose based on what your child is likely to eat, whether the meal can accommodate dietary needs and family practices, preparation time and cost, and whether the food can be held safely at the required temperature. A school meal may suit a child who enjoys its choices; packing may help when you need more control over ingredients or accommodations. Consider the school’s food rules and storage options before deciding.
