The right build depends on the edition, and “automatic” can mean either automatically collecting items or automatically casting, catching, reeling in, and casting again.
Java Edition can use a redstone-driven AFK design, although modern farms are more complicated than old one-block builds. Bedrock Edition can automate collection with a compact redstone structure, but a continuous fishing loop normally needs repeated external input, such as an autoclicker.
Before you build: choose your edition

No command is required for a normal vanilla farm. A command such as /autofisher status, when offered by a mod, is not a standard Minecraft command.
Java Edition: build requirements
Java AFK fishing is version-sensitive. Since Snapshot 20w12a, the bobber must be inside a valid 5×5×4 open-water area to obtain treasure loot, according to the Minecraft fish-farming reference. The space can contain water, air, or lily pads, but it cannot be treated as the tiny enclosed water pocket used by many pre-1.16 tutorials.

In practice, a current Java farm needs three parts:
- A valid open-water fishing area: leave the required 5×5×4 region around the bobber unobstructed by solid blocks.
- A bite detector: modern designs commonly use a timing circuit or a sculk sensor to identify the fishing event.
- A reel-and-recast mechanism: the mechanism must interact with the rod, not merely move items after a catch.
How to construct a Java farm safely
- Choose a Java Edition tutorial that names your exact Minecraft release. Do not assume a farm labelled “1.21+” will work in every later release.
- Build the fishing chamber first. Measure the bobber’s position and preserve a 5×5×4 volume of water, air, or lily pads around it.
- Install the tutorial’s detector and reel mechanism exactly as shown. Do not substitute a Bedrock note-block design or an old 1.14/1.15 one-block farm.
- Put hoppers beneath the collection area and point them into one or more chests. Test that dropped items travel through the hopper before leaving the farm unattended.
- Cast the rod and watch several bite cycles. A working farm should reel in and recast rather than merely leave the bobber in the water.
- Check the chest after a longer test. If it contains fish and junk but no treasure, inspect the open-water volume before changing the redstone.
Why old Java tutorials fail
The classic compact AFK fish farm could catch fish and some junk, but its enclosed bobber position no longer qualifies for Java treasure fishing. It may look operational because the bobber moves and items arrive in the chest, while enchanted books, saddles, name tags, and enchanted rods never appear.
Sculk-sensor designs also need testing. A sensor may respond to casting, bobber movement, or other vibration events as well as a bite. In some reported designs this makes a trapdoor or reel cycle trigger too early or repeatedly. Bubble-column positioning can introduce another version-dependent failure. Treat the exact tutorial version as part of the build, not as optional information.

Bedrock Edition: compact collection farm
The commonly used Bedrock design is a small collection cell. Its basic material list is:

- 2 chests
- 1 hopper
- 1 iron trapdoor
- 1 note block
- 1 fence post
- 1 pressure plate
- 1 building block
- 1 water bucket
- 1 fishing rod
This material list describes a Bedrock-oriented build. It does not establish that the same arrangement works in Java, and it does not make the machine fully autonomous without repeated input.
Bedrock build steps
- Place the double chest where you want the output stored.
- Place the hopper so its output points into the chest. Verify the hopper’s direction by opening it: the output connection should lead to the chest.
- Build the small fishing cell around the hopper using the fence post, building block, iron trapdoor, note block, and pressure plate. Position the trapdoor and note block according to the Bedrock design you are following; their interaction is edition-specific.
- Add the water source to the bobber position shown by the design. The fishing bobber must land in the water rather than on the trapdoor, note block, or surrounding block.
- Hold the fishing rod, aim at the designated point, and cast it into the cell.
- Start the approved autoclicker or other repeated-input method so the rod can reel in and cast again. Test it while watching the first several cycles.
- Confirm that catches enter the hopper and chest. If the rod reels in but the item lands outside the hopper, adjust the collection cell rather than increasing the click rate.
On Bedrock, the note block does not independently perform an unlimited fishing loop. The machine can help with positioning and collection, but repeated player input is normally still required. On consoles and mobile devices, the input method may be unavailable, impractical, or prohibited by the platform or server rules.

Make the farm safe for AFK use
Protect the fishing rod
Fishing rods have different durability by edition: 64 durability units in Java and 384 in Bedrock, according to the Minecraft fishing reference. A farm that repeatedly reels in entities, misses, or triggers unsuccessful cycles can eventually break an unenchanted rod.
Use one of these approaches:
- Keep replacement rods available and check the farm regularly.
- Use a rod with Mending and provide a reliable way for the farm to collect the XP needed for repairs.
- Stop the farm before the durability bar is nearly empty, especially during initial testing.
Lure and Luck of the Sea can change fishing speed and loot quality, but they do not fix an invalid farm design. Mending also does not help if the farm never supplies XP to the rod.
Prevent common AFK failures

AFK conditions
Stay within the area far enough for the farm to remain loaded. If the chunk unloads, the redstone and fishing activity will stop. Also check server rules before using an autoclicker or any client-side fishing mod. A mod that automatically reels and recasts is a separate automation method, not a vanilla farm, and multiplayer servers may treat it as prohibited gameplay.

What loot should you expect?
A Java farm that fails the open-water check can still be useful for fish and junk, but it should not be advertised as an enchanted-book farm. Conversely, the presence of fish in the chest does not prove that the treasure setup is correct. Test the loot category separately from the item-collection mechanism.
Bedrock and Java also differ in rod durability, input handling, and the redstone behavior used by popular tutorials. Avoid claims that a single machine works on Java, Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile, and PC unless the article or tutorial explains the separate edition mechanics and the required external input.

Can I make a completely automatic AFK fish farm in Minecraft Bedrock?
Not with the same vanilla loop used by some Java designs. Bedrock can automate collection, but continuous recasting normally needs an autoclicker or another external repeated-input method.

Why does my Java AFK fish farm catch fish but no enchanted books?
The bobber is probably not inside Java’s required 5×5×4 open-water region. Many compact pre-1.16 designs still catch fish and junk but fail the modern treasure check.
Do I need commands to build an AFK fish farm?
No. A vanilla farm uses blocks, a fishing rod, player input, and redstone. Commands or mod commands belong to separate command-block, datapack, server, or modded solutions.
Will the same farm work in Java and Bedrock?
Do not assume so. Java and Bedrock use different mechanics and input handling. Use an edition-specific design and verify its exact Minecraft version.
How long will an unenchanted fishing rod last in an AFK farm?
There is no single time guarantee because durability loss depends on the farm’s cycles and misses. Java rods have 64 durability units and Bedrock rods have 384, so monitor the rod or use Mending with a reliable XP source.
