To make audio less echoey, use a dedicated de-reverberation effect for room reflections, then adjust it gradually while comparing the result with the original. If the clip also has steady hiss or hum, reduce that separately: noise reduction and de-reverberation address different problems. For future recordings, move the microphone closer to the speaker and reduce reflections in the room.

First identify what sounds wrong

People often use “echo” to describe any distant, roomy voice. In editing, the issue is often reverberation: sound reflections that linger after the direct voice. That differs from steady background noise such as hiss or hum. The distinction matters because a noise-reduction effect is not a substitute for de-reverberation.

  • Room reverberation: The voice sounds spacious, distant, or as though it continues briefly after each word. Try a dedicated DeReverb or de-reverberation control.
  • Steady noise: A persistent hiss or hum sits behind the voice. Use a noise-reduction process designed for background noise.
  • Both: Treat the room reflections and steady noise as separate problems, then listen for artifacts after each stage.

Adobe documents Audition’s DeReverb effect for unwanted room reverberation and describes its separate Noise Reduction effect as targeting background and broadband noise. Audacity’s Noise Reduction workflow is likewise aimed at steady noise, not room echo: Adobe Audition noise reduction and restoration effects and Audacity Noise Reduction.

How to reduce echo in an existing recording

  1. Save an untouched original. Make a copy of the audio before processing so you can compare versions or start over.
  2. Listen to a representative section. Choose a passage with typical speech and decide whether reverberation, steady noise, or both are most noticeable.
  3. Apply de-reverberation for room reflections. In Adobe Audition, use the DeReverb effect. Adobe says the effect estimates the reverberation profile and lets you adjust the amount of processing. Other editors may offer a similarly named de-reverb control.
  4. Increase processing gradually and compare. Listen to the processed section against the original. There is no universal setting: the suitable amount depends on the recording and the quality loss you can accept. Too much processing can make speech sound unnatural.
  5. Reduce steady noise separately, if needed. In Audacity, select a portion that contains only the noise, capture its noise profile, and apply Noise Reduction to the target range. A noise-only profile is for steady background noise; it does not remove room echo.
  6. Check the whole clip. Listen for remaining reflections and processing artifacts, especially around words and pauses. Keep the version that makes the speech clearer without introducing distracting artifacts.

De-reverberation can improve intelligibility, but the available guidance does not establish that every recording can be made completely dry or restored without artifacts. Preserve the original and judge the result by listening rather than aiming for a guaranteed level of removal.

Prevent echo when recording speech

Bring the microphone closer

Shure recommends a spoken-word microphone distance of about 6–12 inches. A closer microphone can capture more direct voice relative to room reflections, but this is a recommendation, not a universal rule for every microphone or room. With a directional microphone, getting too close can cause proximity effect and make the voice overly bassy. Adjust distance while listening to the voice and room sound.

Reduce reflections in the room

Soft furnishings or suitable acoustic treatment can help manage reflections in a recording space. Keep the microphone away from reflective surfaces where practical, and consider the room as part of the recording setup. A microphone can capture sound differently depending on placement, but it cannot change the room’s acoustics; buying a different or more expensive microphone alone is not a reliable cure for a reflective space. Shure discusses microphone placement and acoustic treatment in its guidance: Shure’s podcast recording guide.

Choose the right kind of fix

Situation Useful approach What it addresses
Roomy or reverberant speech already recorded A dedicated DeReverb or de-reverberation effect Room reflections in the captured audio
Steady hiss or hum already recorded Noise reduction using a noise-only profile where supported Steady background noise, not room echo
Speech not yet recorded in a reflective room Move the microphone closer and manage room reflections Recording conditions, reducing the amount of room sound captured
Both reverberation and steady noise are present Process each problem separately and listen for artifacts Two distinct sound issues; one control should not be expected to solve both

Adobe Audition is one documented option for repairing existing audio with DeReverb. Audacity’s documented Noise Reduction is useful when steady noise is also present. The cited guidance does not establish current software prices or a controlled comparison of de-reverberation products, so choose based on the controls available in your editor and the needs of your clip.
