You can make an Android phone feel more stock-like by simplifying its home screen, choosing a restrained look, and setting navigation and supported default apps to suit you. You cannot turn every manufacturer’s software into Google’s exact interface: Android menus and available features vary by brand and version. Start with the phone’s built-in settings, and search Settings if a path below does not match your device.

How do I make my Android look like stock Android?

Begin with the built-in home screen. This is the simplest way to reduce clutter without replacing the phone’s software. Google notes that steps can vary by device in its Android home-screen help.

  1. Open Home settings: Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen, then open Home settings if that option appears. On some phones, the label or route differs; search Settings for “Home screen” or “Home settings.”
  2. Trim the favorites row: Remove apps you rarely use or arrange the remaining ones in an order that makes sense. Removing an icon from the home screen does not uninstall the app.
  3. Keep only useful home-screen items: Add the apps, shortcuts, and widgets you actually use. Put related apps into folders rather than spreading icons across several screens. Android’s instructions for adding and arranging these items are in its home-screen guide.
  4. Check the result before changing more: Keep the layout easy to scan. A small number of deliberate choices usually feels simpler than filling every available space.

How can I get a stock Android home screen?

On many phones, the built-in launcher can already provide a clean, minimal layout. Start there before installing anything: manufacturer launchers differ, and the controls available depend on the device. If you cannot find a setting, use Settings search for terms such as “Home screen,” “Grid,” or “Wallpaper.”

A third-party launcher is another option if your built-in home screen lacks a layout control you want. It changes the home-screen experience, not the phone’s entire operating system. The official Android guidance cited here does not establish which third-party launchers are currently maintained or how their features and privacy practices compare, so choose one only after checking those details independently.

Choose a restrained wallpaper, color, and icon style

Changing the wallpaper and reducing visual contrast can make a phone feel less busy. Pixel phones have built-in controls under Wallpaper & style for wallpaper, colors, icon appearance, and home-screen grid. Google describes those controls in its Pixel wallpaper and style guide.

On Pixel, open Wallpaper & style from the home-screen customization options or Settings, then adjust the available options. The precise choices can depend on software version, updates, or location; other manufacturers may use different labels or offer different controls. Do not assume another Android phone has the same icon styles, shapes, grid sizes, or theme packs.

Can I change my Android launcher?

Yes, if your phone offers another launcher or you install one. To switch, look in Settings for “Default apps” or “Home app”; manufacturer menus vary. The built-in launcher is the lower-friction choice if your goal is simply to remove clutter or rearrange the home screen. A different launcher may change the home-screen layout and behavior, but it does not replace manufacturer-specific menus or other parts of Android.

Choose gestures or three-button navigation

Android commonly offers gesture navigation and three-button navigation. Gestures use swipes for actions such as going Home or returning to the previous screen; three-button navigation keeps on-screen controls visible. Pick the option that feels more comfortable and predictable to you rather than changing it just to imitate another phone.

Look in Settings for Navigation mode, System navigation, or “Gestures”; the exact route depends on the device. Google’s Android navigation help explains the modes and notes that increasing gesture sensitivity can interfere with some apps’ edge gestures. If an app becomes harder to use after switching, try the other navigation mode or reduce gesture sensitivity where that control is available.

Change default apps only where it helps

Default apps decide which app handles certain supported actions. On Pixel, open Settings > Apps > Default apps to review the available categories, as described in Google’s Pixel default-apps guide. Changing a default can make an everyday action open in a different app; it does not change the overall Android interface.

Only categories and alternatives supported by the phone appear. You cannot assume every built-in app can be replaced, and menu names or choices can differ outside Pixel.

Make optional lock-screen changes

If you want a more minimal look beyond the home screen, check the lock-screen settings for shortcut and notification options. Pixel’s lock-screen customization guide describes these choices. Its clock-style customization instructions apply to Android 16 and later; do not expect that control on earlier versions or every Android phone.

Make changes one at a time

Change one setting, use the phone for a while, and then decide whether to keep it. That makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped and to undo one that causes friction. Because manufacturers and Android versions differ, treat the paths here as starting points and check your phone’s own Settings search for the matching control.
