To run sleep sounds with a black picture on YouTube, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, send it a black video scene and rights-cleared audio, then test the output in Live Control Room before leaving it unattended. The computer and encoder must remain on and connected for this do-it-yourself method, and a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived. What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. YouTube says live streaming requires verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s eligibility and encoder setup guidance before your planned broadcast.
- A computer running streaming software, or a compatible hardware encoder. For a simple static black frame and audio, software encoding is a straightforward starting point; YouTube does not require professional hardware for every stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and testing the connection; a wired Ethernet connection is an option if your computer and network support it. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Sleep-sounds audio that you created or have rights to use for both the live broadcast and any retained replay.
Set up the black-screen livestream
1. Enable live streaming and create the event
- Confirm that the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements. If live streaming has not been enabled before, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Scheduling gives you a watch page to prepare and share in advance. YouTube’s live-stream settings guide explains event settings.
- Choose the stream’s visibility and other event details, then keep Live Control Room available for preview and monitoring.
2. Connect your encoder to YouTube
- In the event or Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key in the streaming software or hardware encoder as its destination. Follow the encoder’s own interface for where those fields appear; YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the connection workflow.
- Treat the stream key like a credential: do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
3. Make the video black and add sleep sounds
- In the encoder, create a scene or video source that outputs a plain black frame. YouTube’s help pages describe encoder setup but do not provide a dedicated black-screen preset; the black frame is configured in the encoder.
- Add your chosen sleep-sounds file or audio input as the audio source. Keep the video source black while confirming that the audio meter moves and the sound is audible at a sensible level.
- Use audio you made yourself or audio with permissions that cover livestreaming and any replay. Permission to use a track does not guarantee that YouTube’s automated checks will leave the stream uninterrupted; see YouTube’s livestream terms and copyright guidance for live streams.
4. Choose stable encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, with AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Use constant bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. For stereo audio, its recommended advanced settings include 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. These are YouTube-published settings, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain a chosen resolution or bitrate; match your encoder’s video bitrate to the upload connection. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings for resolution-specific bitrate guidance.
5. Test before leaving it overnight
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming signal and preview in Live Control Room.
- Check that the picture is genuinely black, the audio is present and not distorted, and there are no unintended overlays or desktop captures.
- Test the watch page on your channel and on a mobile device, as YouTube recommends. Let the test run long enough to confirm that both picture and sound stay correct.
- Monitor stream health and upload stability. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream and keeping upload headroom; see its live-streaming tips and connection guidance.
Plan the overnight duration and replay
Decide whether the broadcast needs a YouTube replay. YouTube says it can automatically archive a livestream shorter than 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining a replay matters, set the planned session below 12 hours with a buffer and keep a local recording as a backup. Read YouTube’s archive guidance before relying on an archive.
For a session that will run unattended, prevent the computer from sleeping, keep the encoder open, and avoid planned network or power interruptions. A dropped connection or stopped encoder can end the feed; YouTube recommends a reliable network and adequate upload headroom, but a home-computer setup still depends on that computer and connection remaining available.

End the stream safely
- When the session is over, end the broadcast in YouTube and stop the encoder, following YouTube’s live-stream tips.
- If a replay matters, check YouTube Studio after the stream to confirm whether an archive was created. Keep the local recording if the replay is important, especially for a session near or beyond YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold.
Copyright and monetization limits
Rights and live copyright checks
You are responsible for having the rights needed for all audio in the stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; it may replace the picture with a placeholder and issue a warning, then interrupt or terminate the stream if the material remains. Even a creator with a license may need the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid interruption. Details are in YouTube’s livestream terms and live copyright guidance.
Monetization is not assured
A black-screen sleep-sounds format is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live content and expects original, authentic material rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive content. Reused-content review is separate from copyright permission, so a licensed recording does not settle every channel-level monetization question. YouTube’s channel monetization policies do not give a categorical ruling for every black-screen sleep stream.

Troubleshoot common problems
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification, restrictions in the past 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still pending. Activation can take up to 24 hours; see eligibility guidance.
- Live Control Room gets no signal: Confirm the encoder destination URL and stream key match the event, then verify the encoder is actively sending. Replace an exposed key in YouTube Studio rather than continuing to use it. See encoder setup.
- The preview is not black: Inspect the selected scene and sources in the encoder; disable desktop capture, overlays, or other video sources that can cover the black frame.
- There is no sound or it is too loud: Check that the intended audio source is routed to the stream, its meter is active, and the encoder is not muted. Listen to the Live Control Room preview or watch page before leaving the broadcast.
- The stream buffers or disconnects: Test upload speed, lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. A wired Ethernet connection may help where available, but is not a YouTube requirement. See streaming tips.
- The stream is interrupted despite having a music license: A rights owner may still need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check YouTube’s live copyright guidance.
- No replay appears: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Check the event length and keep a local recording if the replay is essential; see archive guidance.
