To make an iPhone wallpaper fit better, set the photo’s framing before applying it: in Photos, open the image, tap Edit > Crop, and choose the Wallpaper aspect-ratio preset if it appears. Then set it from Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos, where you can adjust the image in the preview. The preset helps compose the image for the screen’s shape; it cannot make a differently shaped image fill the display while retaining every edge.
Why an iPhone wallpaper may look zoomed or cropped
A photo and a phone display do not always have the same shape. To fill the screen edge to edge, the image may need to be enlarged and some of its edges left outside the visible area. Preserving the entire photo instead may leave unused space or require a different composition. There is no universal setting that guarantees both a full-screen fill and every original edge.
For the best framing, decide which part of the photo matters most and position that area in the crop or wallpaper preview. Apple’s iPhone guide lists Wallpaper as a crop aspect-ratio preset in Photos, which can help you compose an image for wallpaper use: Apple’s iPhone photo-cropping guide.

Tap Edit, then tap Crop.

Choose the Wallpaper aspect-ratio preset if it is available. Move the crop window to keep the subject or important details in view.

Save the edit, then set the photo as wallpaper using the Settings steps below.

Editing the crop first gives you control over which part of the original photo is emphasized. If you want to retain the uncropped original, keep a copy before saving the edit.
Adjust the image in the wallpaper preview

Open Settings and tap Wallpaper.

Tap Add New Wallpaper, then choose Photos.

Select the image. Adjust its position in the preview so the subject sits where you want it on the screen.

Tap Add. Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the selection for both the Lock Screen and Home Screen, or customize the Home Screen separately.
Apple documents this workflow in Change your iPhone wallpaper. The Lock Screen and Home Screen can have different wallpaper configurations, so choose the pair option only if you want the same selection on both.

If it still looks wrong

A subject is cut off: Reopen the crop or wallpaper preview and reposition the image so the subject is inside the visible area.

You want to show more of the original photo: Use a composition that preserves the details you care about, accepting that filling the display edge to edge may not be possible without losing some edges.

The Lock Screen looks right but the Home Screen does not: Set or customize the Home Screen separately rather than assuming the Lock Screen choice automatically gives the same result on both.

Optional: Spatial Scene on supported iPhones
With iOS 26, iPhone 12 or later can turn some photos into 3D Spatial Scene wallpapers. Apple describes this as a Lock Screen effect for eligible images, typically those with high-quality lighting, a clearly separated subject and background, or a landscape orientation.
