Build your interface to respond to the space the app has at runtime, rather than creating a fixed screen for every iPhone model or treating portrait and landscape as the only possibilities. In SwiftUI, compose flexible views and use size classes for meaningful presentation changes. In UIKit, combine Auto Layout constraints with stack views. Then test rotation, resized iPad windows, larger text, and localized content.
What an adaptive layout needs to respond to
A device’s nominal screen size is only one factor. The space available to your app can change when someone rotates a device, resizes a window, or uses iPad multitasking. Text size and localized strings can also change how much room content needs. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines summarize the scope: “Apps and games need to adapt to different display sizes, orientation changes, window sizes, and multitasking states.” Apple’s Layout guidance was published September 9, 2026.
Size classes describe the amount of available space horizontally and vertically. Each dimension can be compact or regular, and the values may change as the device’s orientation or window configuration changes. Treat them as information about the current layout environment—not as labels for a particular iPhone or iPad model. Apple’s SwiftUI size-class documentation explains these categories.
Choose the layout approach for your app
Use the layout system that fits your existing architecture. SwiftUI is designed to arrange views according to proposed space; UIKit provides stack views and Auto Layout constraints for arranging and sizing interface elements. The choice is less about competing solutions than whether you need flexible composition, explicit relationships, or a larger change in presentation. Apple’s Interface fundamentals describe the broader design principles.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
| Approach | Best starting point | When to add conditional changes |
|---|---|---|
| SwiftUI | Compose flexible stacks, grids, and views that can expand or wrap. | Read size classes when the available space calls for a meaningful change, such as revealing a secondary pane or changing navigation structure. |
| UIKit | Use UIStackView for automatic arrangement and Auto Layout constraints for precise relationships. | React to trait changes when the interface needs a larger adjustment than its constraints and stack views provide automatically. |
Build an adaptive interface in SwiftUI
Start with flexible composition
Arrange content so it can use the space offered to it: stacks and grids can help group elements, while flexible views can expand or let content wrap. Avoid hard-coding a screen to one device’s dimensions when the content can instead adapt to the proposed space.
Use size classes for deliberate presentation changes
Read the horizontal and vertical size classes when the interface should change structure, not merely because a device has rotated. For example, an app might reveal a secondary pane when there is enough room or use a different navigation arrangement when space is limited. SwiftUI exposes these values through environment properties such as @Environment(.horizontalSizeClass) and @Environment(.verticalSizeClass). Keep the resulting view responsive to environment changes while the app is running; do not assume a given device always has a particular size class.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Apple documents the available size-class values in UserInterfaceSizeClass.

Arrange related content with stack views
Use UIStackView when its automatic arrangement is suitable for a group of controls or content. It can reduce the need to position every item independently.

Define relationships with Auto Layout
Use Auto Layout constraints to express how views relate to one another and how they should size. Anchor content to the safe area or layout margins where appropriate, so it does not collide with system interface features or sit unnecessarily close to the edges. Apple’s View layout documentation covers UIKit layout concepts.
Respond to trait changes with current APIs
UIKit can perform layout again as traits change. For custom reactions, Apple documents automatic trait tracking and registration through UITraitChangeObservable. For new code, do not rely on the deprecated traitCollectionDidChange: as the general mechanism for observing trait changes. See Apple’s trait-change documentation.

Handle rotation and window resizing as normal states
Landscape is not one universal layout. A landscape phone, a narrow split-view window, and a wide iPad window can offer very different amounts of horizontal and vertical space. Base layout decisions on the current environment, then rearrange content or navigation when that improves usability. Keep core tasks recognizable and available rather than making the interface depend on a single orientation.
Consider the combinations of compact and regular width and height that your app can encounter. Apple notes that size-class combinations can occur across portrait and landscape aspect ratios; orientation alone is not a reliable substitute for checking available space. See the Layout guidance.

Test the layouts people can actually encounter
- Rotate the device and check that controls, text, and content remain visible and usable.
- Exercise compact and regular width and height combinations instead of checking only one phone and one tablet.
- On iPad, test full-screen and multitasking or window configurations, including narrow and short windows.
- Increase Dynamic Type settings and check that text can grow without clipping or hiding essential controls.
- Test longer translated strings and right-to-left layout if your app supports localization.
- Check safe-area placement around system interface features, and make sure scrolling or reflow still exposes all content.
- Verify that navigation changes remain familiar and core tasks are available in each layout.
These checks cover the layout variables Apple describes across its Layout, UIKit View, SwiftUI size-class, and trait-change documentation.
