Then adjust one setting at a time under Settings > Accessibility. These built-in options can make the mini more comfortable for reading, browsing, watching, or light typing without assuming you need a particular setup.
Start with the specific task that feels difficult
iPad accessibility settings cover vision, hearing, mobility, speech, and cognitive needs. You can configure features during setup or change them later in Settings. To see the available controls, open Settings > Accessibility or review Apple’s accessibility overview for iPad.
Before changing anything, identify the friction point. Small text may call for a text-size adjustment; difficulty reading a particular passage may call for magnification or spoken reading; awkward touch gestures may call for a different interaction method. Try one or two changes, use the iPad for your normal tasks, and keep the ones that help.
Make text and onscreen elements easier to see
Adjust display and text settings
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size to explore visual controls. Apple documents options for changing how onscreen content appears, including Show Borders, which can make the boundaries of controls easier to distinguish. Increasing text size or other visual elements can improve legibility, but it also means less content may fit on the mini’s compact display at once. Try a moderate change first and check it in the apps you use most.
Customize only the apps that need it
If one app is harder to read than the rest, use Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings rather than changing the appearance everywhere. Apple’s per-app visual accessibility guide covers app-specific text size, color, and motion adjustments, including settings for the Home Screen and App Library.

Use Zoom when enlarging text is not enough
Screen Zoom magnifies content rather than simply changing text size. Open Settings > Accessibility > Zoom to turn it on and choose how magnification behaves. Apple documents three approaches: full-screen magnification, a movable window lens, or a pinned region. A window can enlarge a selected part of the display while leaving the rest visible; full-screen Zoom enlarges the whole display.
You can activate Zoom with a three-finger double-tap, set a maximum zoom level, and add Zoom to Accessibility Shortcut for quicker access. Explore the controls in Apple’s iPad Zoom guide. As with larger text, magnification reduces how much surrounding content you can see at once.

Choose between spoken reading and screen-reader navigation
Use Read & Speak to hear text
If reading is tiring, spoken-reading features can read text aloud without changing the basic purpose of the interface. Apple groups Read & Speak with accessibility features available during setup and in Settings; see its guide to accessibility during iPad setup. Look under Settings > Accessibility for the available speech controls.
Use VoiceOver for spoken interface navigation
VoiceOver is a screen reader: it speaks interface items and has its own gesture conventions for navigating and interacting with the iPad. It is not simply a way to make printed text larger or read one passage aloud. If your goal is only to listen to text, start with Read & Speak instead. Simplify touch or pointer interaction
Configure AssistiveTouch for touch alternatives
AssistiveTouch adds a configurable onscreen menu and supports custom actions and gestures. It can also work with pointer devices. If standard touch interactions feel awkward, open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and review the available options. Apple explains the feature in its AssistiveTouch guide.
Make a mouse or trackpad pointer easier to locate
If you use a mouse or trackpad, pointer controls can adjust its appearance, including size and color. Apple’s pointer visibility guide describes those adjustments. A pointer device offers an alternative to direct touch; it does not replace the iPad’s touch interface.

Add hardware only when it solves a real task
An external keyboard can be useful if you type frequently, and it can support keyboard-based Zoom workflows. A mouse or trackpad may suit pointer-based interaction. Before buying or connecting an accessory, check compatibility with your exact iPad mini model and any case you use. Apple documents keyboard interaction alongside Zoom controls in its Zoom instructions.
For stationary reading or video, an adjustable stand may make hands-free viewing more comfortable. Treat it as a practical convenience, not an Apple-endorsed accessibility feature. You can also make the iPad easier to use without purchasing anything by testing its built-in display, reading, touch, and pointer settings first.
Know what Stage Manager support means on iPad mini
For readers considering a more windowed workflow, Apple’s Stage Manager support page, published September 15, 2025, lists iPad mini (A17 Pro) among the models that support Stage Manager with iPadOS 26. The same page does not list that model among those that can move Stage Manager windows to an external display. These are distinct capabilities; check Apple’s Stage Manager model and external-display requirements for the model and software you use.
