You can share Wi-Fi with a QR code instead of reading out the password. On a supported Android phone, open the saved network’s settings and tap Share. To make a code you can print or use across devices, enter the network name, password, and security type in a Wi-Fi QR generator. Test the code before you display it: anyone who can scan it may be able to retrieve the network credentials.

Choose how to make the Wi-Fi QR code

Method Best for What to know
Android’s built-in Share option Quickly sharing a saved network with someone nearby Android displays a code for another device to scan. Menu labels can vary by manufacturer and OS version. Google’s Android instructions document this route.
Wi-Fi QR generator Making a static image to save or print You supply the SSID, security type, and password, and may need to specify whether the network is hidden. A generator’s privacy practices vary; do not assume credentials stay on your device.

Use a separate guest network if visitors will scan a code displayed in a shared or public area. That keeps the credentials you share separate from the network used by household devices.

Make a code from Android settings

  1. On your Android phone, open Settings → Network & internet → Internet.
  2. Tap the saved Wi-Fi network you want to share.
  3. Tap Share and follow any on-screen authentication prompt.
  4. Have your guest scan the displayed QR code with another device and accept the join prompt.

Google’s Android Help says, “Your device will give you a QR code. To join the same network, have your friend scan the code with another device.” The precise menu names may differ across Android versions and manufacturers. See Google’s Android Wi-Fi instructions.

Make a printable code with a generator

  1. Get the exact network details. Use the SSID exactly as configured, including capitalization, along with the current password and security type.
  2. Enter them in a Wi-Fi QR generator. Choose a tool that lets you set the network name, security, password, and hidden-network status. Check how the service handles credentials; privacy practices differ.
  3. Set hidden-network status if needed. If your Wi-Fi network is hidden, enable the generator’s hidden-network option.
  4. Download the generated image. A Wi-Fi QR code is static: it contains the connection details and will not update when you change the password.
  5. Test it before printing. Scan the saved image with a phone, check that a join prompt appears, and confirm the device connects.

Wi-Fi QR formats encode fields such as the security type, SSID, and password. Characters including semicolons, commas, colons, backslashes, and quotation marks can cause problems if not escaped correctly. Using a generator that handles escaping can help avoid formatting errors.

Scan and print the code so guests can use it

Keep a blank margin around the QR code and place it on a surface that stays clear and visible. A table tent or reception sign can make it easy to find; avoid glare that interferes with camera focus. Printing is optional if you plan to show the code directly from a phone.

iPhones can scan Wi-Fi QR codes with the Camera app, but the Apple material available here does not establish a current iPhone method for generating one. For a printable code, a generator that accepts the network details is an option. Samsung Care’s 2022 instructions show a Wi-Fi settings QR Code option on Galaxy devices, but those menus may have changed. See Samsung Care’s instructions.

Protect the network credentials in the code

A Wi-Fi QR code is not a password vault. Its pattern encodes connection details in a form that a scanning device can read; a person who photographs or scans a displayed code may be able to recover the password. Treat a sign with a Wi-Fi QR code as sharing credentials with anyone who can see it.

  • Use a guest network for visitors, especially when displaying the code where people outside your household can access it.
  • Only display the code in places where you are comfortable sharing that network’s credentials.
  • After changing the Wi-Fi password, create and distribute a new code. The old static code still contains the previous details.

OpenQR describes its own generated code this way: “The password sits in the code as plain, readable text: exactly what a scanning phone decodes and uses to connect.” OpenQR’s explanation is a vendor statement, not a standards-body assessment.

Fix common Wi-Fi QR code problems

No join prompt appears

Try scanning with the phone’s Camera app or its built-in Wi-Fi sharing or scanning interface. Support and menu labels vary by device and OS version.

The phone sees the network but will not connect

Check that the SSID, password, and security type match the router. If the network is hidden, verify that the hidden-network option is enabled. Also check how the code handles special characters in the SSID or password.

The code used to work but no longer does

If the Wi-Fi password changed, generate and share a replacement code. A static code does not update when network credentials change.

The printed code is difficult to scan

Make sure there is a clear blank margin around the code, reduce glare, and use a display surface that keeps the image flat, visible, and unobstructed.
