Build your presentation around the event’s rubric, permitted format, and time limit. Then explain the project as a connected story: the problem or question, your approach, the evidence, what it means, and what you would do next. Give every teammate a meaningful role, and rehearse both the handoffs and the questions judges may ask.
Start with the competition’s rules and rubric
There is no single presentation format or time limit for every STEM competition. Before creating slides, a poster, or a demonstration, find the event’s current rules and judging criteria. Check what formats are allowed, how much time you have, whether questions are included in that time, and any limits on display size or equipment.
For example, Penn State Hazleton’s Regional STEM Research Fair lists poster, oral slideshow, and show-and-tell formats. Its published schedule allows 10 minutes total: 8 minutes for the student presentation and 2 minutes for questions. That is a rule for that fair, not a general STEM competition standard; check the current guidance for your event at Penn State Hazleton’s Regional STEM Research Fair guidance.
Read the rubric for the qualities judges will assess, such as project understanding, evidence, conclusions, communication, and individual contributions. A useful plan makes those qualities visible instead of treating the presentation as a speech separate from the project.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What should we include in our science fair presentation?
Use a sequence that lets judges follow the reasoning from the original problem to the final conclusion. Adapt the emphasis to your project: a research investigation should make its question and evidence clear, while an engineering project should explain the need, design choices, and how the solution was evaluated.
- Problem, need, or question: State what you wanted to understand or solve and why it matters. For a design project, identify the intended user or need.
- Approach: Explain the experiment, investigation, or design process. Focus on important choices and why you made them rather than listing every activity.
- Evidence: Show the most useful data, observations, tests, or prototype behavior. Label charts, diagrams, and photographs, and explain what each one demonstrates.
- Interpretation: Explain what the evidence means, whether the project met its goal, and what limitations affect your conclusion.
- Conclusion and next step: Give a clear answer or outcome, then name one evidence-based improvement or next investigation.
This is a planning scaffold, not a required script. Follow the event’s rubric and make room for the aspects of the project that best demonstrate your team’s understanding. Society for Science’s ISEF Grand Award Judging Criteria distinguish science and engineering expectations while addressing project understanding, results, conclusions, limitations, and team contributions.

Choose slides, a poster, or a demonstration to fit the project
If the event permits more than one format, choose the one that makes your evidence easiest to understand and inspect. No format is universally better; compare the options against the rules and the needs of your project.
- Slides or an oral presentation: Use an order the audience can follow, with visuals that explain the process or results. Keep text and visuals in balance, and make labels readable.
- Poster or exhibit: Organize the information so judges can quickly see the question, method or design, evidence, and conclusion. Confirm any size and setup rules before buying display materials; a tri-fold board is useful only if it suits the permitted format.
- Show-and-tell: Let the working device or demonstration carry the explanation when the project’s practical operation is central. Use supporting charts, images, or media to clarify how it was tested and what the results show.
Penn State Hazleton’s fair judging criteria assess organization and the use of text and visuals across presentation formats. Treat visual design as a way to make the work clearer, not a substitute for explaining the evidence.

How do we divide the presentation between team members?
Assign each person a meaningful segment that matches their contribution, then rehearse the transitions so the presentation sounds connected rather than like separate mini-talks. One teammate might introduce the question, another explain the method or design, and another interpret the evidence; adapt the split to your team’s actual work and the time limit.
Every member should understand the full project, not only the lines they deliver. Judges may direct a question to any student, and rubrics can assess both participation and individual understanding. Society for Science’s ISEF criteria state: “However, all team members should demonstrate significant contributions to and an understanding of the project.” See the official criteria.

Rehearse to the actual time limit and prepare for questions
Practice with a timer set to the event’s stated limit, including any question period if it is part of the schedule. If you consistently run long, cut less important detail rather than rushing through the results or conclusion. Rehearse the handoffs and any demonstration, including who operates equipment and what the team will say if it does not work as expected.
Take turns answering questions in short, evidence-based responses. These prompts reflect common judging areas; they are preparation questions, not a guaranteed script from the judges:
