A slip ring power connector transfers electricity between a stationary supply and a rotating part through sliding contacts. Its basic arrangement uses conductive rings on the rotating side and stationary brushes or wipers that stay in contact as the assembly turns. You can use that principle to plan a design, but the information available here is not enough to specify or validate a safe, rated DIY build—especially for mains voltage or unattended use.
How a slip ring power connector works
A conductive ring rotates with the shaft or other moving structure. A stationary brush or wiper touches the ring, maintaining an electrical path while the structure turns. Leads connect the rotating and stationary contacts to their respective circuits; connectors may be added to suit the installation. Moog describes this sliding-contact arrangement and the basic assembly components in its slip ring overview.
Each electrically independent circuit needs its own isolated conductive path. The number and ratings of those paths depend on the actual application. A path that carries a sensitive signal may have different requirements from one carrying power, so circuit count alone does not establish compatibility.
What to establish before choosing components
Write down the application requirements first. Without them, there is no sound basis for selecting ring dimensions, conductor gauge, contact force, insulation clearances, or electrical ratings.

- Electrical load: supply type, voltage, normal and maximum current, and whether the load is continuous or intermittent.
- Circuits: how many independent paths are needed and whether any carry sensitive signals.
- Rotation and service: speed, operating hours, direction changes, and required service life.
- Mechanical fit: shaft or enclosure dimensions, support arrangement, and which part rotates.
- Environment: dust, moisture, chemicals, temperature, vibration, and other exposure.
- Installation and upkeep: enclosure, insulation, strain relief, inspection, and maintenance requirements.
These inputs matter because slip-ring configurations and performance depend on the complete application and assembly, not just the apparent size of a ring. Moog discusses application and configuration factors in its catalog overview; product families also vary by design and use. Check the documentation for the specific assembly rather than inferring a rating from a generic product name or appearance.
DIY concept—and what it does not specify
At a conceptual level, a prototype would place conductive tracks around a rotating axis, electrically isolate each track from the others, keep a conductive contact against each track, and route separate leads from the rotating and stationary sides. This describes the ring-and-brush principle; it is not a tested construction procedure or a rated design.

The available manufacturer information does not establish a universal DIY recipe, material choice, track dimensions, spring force, surface finish, contact-resistance limit, or safe parts list for an unspecified load. It also does not validate a homemade connector for household mains, unattended operation, hazardous environments, or safety-critical machinery. Do not treat a low-voltage concept as evidence that the same construction is suitable for a more demanding installation.
Any design must mechanically support and align the contacts, keep leads from rubbing or winding around the rotor, and enclose exposed conductors appropriately. Ratings, insulation, grounding, enclosure, and mechanical retention must be established for the real installation. If you cannot establish them, choose an appropriately rated commercial assembly or seek qualified engineering review.

Installation guidance for a commercial assembly
Follow the instructions for the exact model you install. The Conductix V Series manual says, “Perform all wiring according to National Electrical Code guidelines and any applicable local codes.” For that product, it also advises using stranded wire whenever possible, tightening screws to their designed electrical rating, and not supporting or carrying the unit by its core leads. These are product-specific installation instructions, not a complete design standard for every slip ring.
How to compare slip ring options
Commercial assemblies include shaft-end instrumentation rings, enclosed designs, and industrial assemblies intended for particular applications. Compare the documented characteristics against your requirements:

A finished slip ring assembly, also called a rotary electrical connector, is the direct alternative when you need power transfer across rotation but do not have an engineered and validated custom design. Confirm that the exact model supports your circuit count, voltage and current, speed, dimensions, mounting, and environment. No particular model can be recommended without those project details.
