You can seek help whether you plan to stay, leave, or have already left. A safety plan is a flexible set of steps shaped around your circumstances—not a promise that you can prevent your partner’s behavior.
What to plan around when cannabis use and violence occur together
Focus on what your partner does and what increases danger for you, not on trying to predict violence from cannabis use alone. If it is safe to do so, notice whether incidents tend to happen around use, and record concrete details such as threats, force, injuries, weapons, children present, and what helped you reach safety. You do not need to keep records if your partner might find them.
The CDC says THC can affect memory, attention, decision-making, and risk-taking. That describes possible effects; it does not establish that cannabis caused a particular person’s violence, predict that someone will become violent, or mean that stopping cannabis will end abuse. The person using abusive behavior is responsible for that behavior. An advocate can help you assess the pattern and make a plan without treating cannabis as an explanation or excuse.
How to stay safer while living together
Choose only the steps that fit your situation. You do not have to complete a checklist, and a step that would expose your plans or increase danger may not be right for you.

Identify safer places and ways to get help
- If it is safe, think ahead about areas of the home with an exit and away from weapons. Consider where you could move if an argument escalates.
- Keep a phone accessible if doing so is safe, and identify trusted people, local shelter contacts, or other ways to get help.
- You might agree on a code word or signal with a trusted friend or neighbor. Be specific about what you want them to do if they receive it.
- If you share a home with children or other household members, plan how they can get to a safer place or ask for help. Do not ask them to step between you and your partner.
Consider privacy before using a device or keeping records
A phone, message, or written record is useful only if it is safe for you to use and keep. A new or prepaid phone is not automatically private and is not something everyone needs. If you are concerned your device or communications may be monitored, consider contacting an advocate from a device or channel you believe is safer before changing settings or storing information. Document threats, injuries, or property damage only if your partner cannot discover the records.
How to prepare if you decide or need to leave
There is no single safest time or way to leave. If leaving is part of your plan, consider what you can prepare without increasing risk; an advocate can help adapt the plan to your circumstances.

- When safe and feasible, consider identification and legal papers, medication, money, keys, and emergency contact numbers.
- Think about how you would access a phone or another safe way to communicate. Do not assume a device is private just because it is new.
- If children or dependents are involved, consider their essential items and practical arrangements, such as who can pick them up or where they can go.
What to consider after leaving
Planning may still matter after a move or separation. Depending on what is safe and possible, consider whether to change locks, review who has your contact information, and think about routines and routes. If children are involved, consider school arrangements and who is authorized to pick them up. You may also want to think about the privacy of your mailing address and identify trusted people who know when and how you want them to seek help.
How a supporter can help
If someone tells you their partner’s cannabis use and violence seem connected, ask what they want and what feels safe. The National Domestic Violence Hotline recommends asking, “How can I help?” Respect their decisions, even if they differ from what you would choose.

- Offer practical support they request, such as helping identify a safer way to contact an advocate or making a plan for a specific situation.
- Before taking action, discuss possible outcomes with them. Calling police or confronting the partner without their agreement can increase risk or take control away from the person experiencing abuse.
- Do not ask them to manage the partner’s cannabis use as a way to prevent violence. Keep the focus on their safety and choices.
Where to get individualized support in the United States
The National Domestic Violence Hotline offers phone and chat support 24/7 at 800-799-SAFE (7233). Advocates can help make a safety plan for living with an abusive partner, preparing to leave, or after leaving. Contact options and service availability can vary; use a communication method that is safe for you.
For mental-health, suicide, or substance-use crisis support, call or text 988, or use its online chat. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides 24/7 support, but it is not a domestic-violence-specific safety-planning service. In the United States, 911 is commonly used for immediate emergencies; whether contacting emergency services is the safest option depends on your circumstances and location.
