Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To recover from a service process that exits unexpectedly, configure that service’s systemd unit with an appropriate restart policy. That is different from configuring a watchdog to reboot the Raspberry Pi when the operating system stops responding. Neither mechanism guarantees that an application is healthy or that every kind of hang will be detected.
What “fixing itself” can mean
Automatic recovery can happen at two different levels. A service manager such as systemd can restart one service after its process fails. A system watchdog can reset the entire Raspberry Pi if the operating system stops servicing the watchdog. The recovery action depends on what failed.
| Mechanism | Failure it targets | Recovery action |
|---|---|---|
| systemd service restart policy | A service process exits in a way covered by its configured policy | Starts that service again |
| System watchdog | The operating system hangs or crashes and stops servicing the watchdog | Resets the Raspberry Pi |
A restart is not a health check: a process may be running yet unable to serve requests, or it may hang without exiting. Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes the system watchdog as useful for recovery from OS hangs or crashes after boot has completed: Raspberry Pi watchdog configuration.
Restarting a failed service with systemd
For a process that exits unexpectedly, systemd can apply a unit’s restart policy. The Raspberry Pi Forums discussion describes Restart=on-failure as an option for restarting a process after an unclean failure: Raspberry Pi Forums discussion of watchdogs. The appropriate policy and its behavior depend on the unit and systemd’s rules; consult the systemd.service manual before changing a production service.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A restart policy addresses process failure, not every reason a service might be unusable. If an application remains alive but stops responding, systemd may have no exit event to act on. Detecting that condition requires a health check or watchdog behavior appropriate to the application; restarting blindly can also mask a recurring fault rather than resolve it.
Using the Raspberry Pi system watchdog
Raspberry Pi documents a kernel setting named kernel_watchdog_timeout, which is disabled by default when set to 0. The hardware watchdog must be handed over to the operating system, which needs to reset it regularly. systemd’s RuntimeWatchdogSec is the documented runtime control for this. On Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm, RuntimeWatchdogSec is not enabled by default, so it must be configured before the firmware kernel watchdog can be used.

This watchdog is for whole-system recovery, not for restarting one application. If it triggers, the Raspberry Pi resets; that is a broader and more disruptive action than restarting a single service. Follow the Raspberry Pi documentation for the OS version and model in use, and verify that the watchdog is actually being serviced rather than assuming that enabling a setting alone proves recovery works: Raspberry Pi watchdog configuration.
Choose recovery based on the failure
- The service exits unexpectedly: use a systemd restart policy suited to the unit’s failure behavior.
- The service is running but unresponsive: a simple restart-on-exit policy may not detect the problem; use application-level monitoring if the service provides it.
- The operating system hangs or crashes: a configured system watchdog can reset the Raspberry Pi if the OS stops servicing it.
These mechanisms cover different failure scopes. A service restart cannot recover a frozen operating system, while a system watchdog reboot is not a targeted way to recover one failed service.

What the headline does—and does not—establish
The claim that a Raspberry Pi “fixes itself” and has not needed SSH for weeks is an author-reported outcome, not a guarantee for other systems. Without the unit configuration, model, logs, monitoring behavior, or failure tests, it is not possible to tell whether the setup handles process exits, silent hangs, or OS-level failures. Testing one failure mode does not establish coverage of the others.
