If your Fire TV Stick buffers, start by finding out whether the trouble is the Wi-Fi link, your internet connection, or one streaming app. On Fire TV, open Settings > Network and check Network Status. It can distinguish the connection between the Stick and your router from the router’s connection to the internet, helping you choose the right fix instead of changing settings at random.
First, find out where buffering is happening
Check whether it affects one app or several
If videos buffer only in one streaming app while other apps play normally, use that app’s troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the Fire TV Stick or your whole network is at fault. Amazon’s Fire TV Support index links to help for app issues, software updates, app crashes, and Prime Video. The specific steps depend on the app and device.
If several apps buffer—or other devices in your home also have trouble—check the network before trying app-level fixes.
Use Fire TV Network Status
- On the Fire TV, open Settings > Network.
- Select the connected Wi-Fi network and open Network Status or the available connection details. Labels and diagnostic options can vary by model and software.
- Check whether the Fire TV-to-router connection or the router-to-internet connection is the one reporting a problem. Some compatible devices also offer a speed test or an Advanced view.
If the link from the Stick to the router is weak, focus on Wi-Fi signal and placement. If the router is connected to Wi-Fi normally but not to the internet, restart the network equipment and check whether your provider has an outage. Restart the Fire TV and reconnect Wi-Fi
A restart can clear a temporary device or connection problem. Unplug the Fire TV Stick from power, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in and let it reconnect.
If buffering continues, try toggling Wi-Fi off and on. You can also forget the network and reconnect by selecting it under Settings > Network and entering the Wi-Fi password again. These steps address the Stick’s connection; they will not resolve a broader internet outage.

Restart your modem and router
When the router-to-internet link is the problem, or multiple devices are affected, restart the network equipment:
- Unplug the modem and router from power for one minute.
- Reconnect the modem first. Wait about a minute for it to start and reconnect to the internet.
- Reconnect the router and allow about a minute for its lights and internet connection to settle before testing Fire TV again.
If other devices remain offline after the restart, contact your internet provider or check for an outage. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the network when multiple devices cannot connect.

Improve the Wi-Fi signal where you watch
If Network Status points to a weak Fire TV-to-router connection, move the Stick and router closer together if practical. Their distance and the home’s layout can affect reception. Try a different placement and check whether streaming improves before spending money on new equipment.
For setup, Amazon recommends using the supplied power adapter rather than powering the Stick from the TV’s USB port: “Plug in the power adapter to the wall. Avoid plugging the USB cable directly into the TV.” An HDMI extender can help when the HDMI port is difficult to reach, but Amazon’s setup instructions do not claim it reduces buffering. Consider wired or upgraded coverage only if the problem calls for it
Ethernet
A wired connection may help when Wi-Fi coverage is the weak point, but Ethernet availability depends on the Fire TV model; some devices require an adapter. Check your specific model’s support information before buying one.
Mesh Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi 6E
A mesh system may be worth considering in a larger home where the router cannot provide reliable coverage in the room with the TV. Amazon also recommends a Wi-Fi 6E-or-higher-capable router for best performance with compatible Fire TV devices. These are conditional options, not guaranteed fixes: they will not solve an internet-provider outage, and compatibility matters. Amazon outlines these options in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Leave a factory reset until other fixes fail
A factory reset is disruptive, so do not use it as the first response to buffering. Try the network checks, restarts, reconnection, and signal-placement steps first. If the problem persists, consult the current instructions for your Fire TV model and consider a reset only after less disruptive troubleshooting has failed.
