You can customize Chrome without installing an extension: on a computer, open a New Tab page, select Customize Chrome, and use Change theme to upload a background image and choose a browser color. You can also generate a theme with AI if the feature is available to you, or install a premade theme from the Chrome Web Store.
Choose the kind of Chrome theme you want
Chrome’s built-in customization changes the browser frame and the New Tab page; it does not change the appearance of other websites. Choose the route that matches the look you want:

These built-in image and color controls are the simplest way to make Chrome feel personal. Uploading an image customizes your browser; it does not create a theme package for publishing or sharing with other people.
Set your own background image and browser color
- On a computer, open Chrome and open a New Tab page.
- Select Customize Chrome in the bottom-right corner.
- Under Appearance, select Change theme, then select Upload an image.
- Choose an image from your computer. Chrome may suggest a browser color based on the image or theme.
- If you want a different color, choose one in the Appearance panel.
The image is used as the New Tab background, while the theme affects the browser border and New Tab page. Chrome also offers theme collections and a daily refresh option. To remove the customization, select Reset to Default Chrome. See Google’s instructions for customizing the New Tab page.

Generate a theme with Chrome’s AI feature
- Open a New Tab page and select Customize Chrome.
- Select Change theme, then Create with AI.
- Choose a subject. Style, mood, and color are optional refinements.
- Select Create, review the generated options, and apply one you like.
Google’s current help page lists being in the United States and being at least 18 as eligibility requirements. A localized version also lists signing in to a Google Account; requirements and availability can vary or change, so check whether Create with AI appears in your Chrome. Creating a theme requires an internet connection and may take up to 10 seconds. Google says temporary server load can prevent a theme from being created.
Google says it collects selected inputs, feedback, and theme usage to improve this feature, including for generative-model research and machine-learning technologies; its improvement process can include human review. This disclosure concerns the AI feature, not manually uploading an image. For current details, see Google’s AI theme instructions and privacy information.

Install a ready-made theme from the Chrome Web Store
- In Chrome, open Settings → Appearance → Themes, or visit the Chrome Web Store’s themes section.
- Preview themes and choose one.
- Select Add to Chrome to apply it.
To remove a store theme, open Settings → Appearance and select Reset to default. Google says themes are stored in your Google Account, so the same theme appears when you are signed in to Chrome on another computer. Store items can vary by browser language and location. - Mobile: Google says themes and extensions cannot be installed on mobile devices, including when browsing in desktop mode. These steps are for Chrome on a computer.
- Work or school computer: An administrator may restrict Web Store installs. If you cannot add a theme, check with your organization or review Google’s troubleshooting guidance.
- AI option missing: The feature may not be available for your location or account, or you may not meet its current eligibility requirements.
- AI reports an offline error: Connect to the internet and try again.
- AI reports a server issue: Temporary server load may be the cause; try again later.
Extensions are separate software from Chrome’s built-in customization and may request permissions. Google advises installing only extensions you trust; an extension is not needed to upload a background image or choose a browser color.
