These steps can help, but they cannot guarantee a speed increase; an older laptop may be limited by its hardware. The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though some labels vary by version.
1. Identify what feels slow, then check for updates
Notice whether the main problem is startup, sluggish apps, a nearly full drive, or slow performance throughout the day. Different symptoms can have different causes. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets performance needs among possible contributors to poor performance. - Save your work and restart the laptop if it has been running for a long time.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates. Check for optional driver updates there if Windows offers them.
- Restart if prompted, then see whether the specific symptom has changed.
Updates and a restart are sensible first checks, not a promise of a fixed improvement. Microsoft notes that older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly from software steps.
2. Stop unneeded apps from launching at sign-in
Apps that start automatically can slow startup and affect performance while you use the laptop. Review the list and disable only entries you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in. Microsoft documents startup controls in Settings and Task Manager.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then select Startup apps. In Windows 10, the tab may be called Startup. Alternatively, open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- In Task Manager, use the startup impact column to help prioritize apps marked with higher impact.
- Select an app you recognize and do not need at sign-in, then choose Disable. You can re-enable it from the same list if needed.
Do not disable unfamiliar items just because they appear in the list. Some are needed for security, hardware controls, cloud synchronization, or accessibility. If Windows provides background activity permissions for an app, review those settings too; availability and labels vary by app and Windows version.
3. Free up system-drive space carefully
Check how much space is available before deleting anything. Open File Explorer > This PC, or go to Settings > System > Storage. A crowded system drive can affect performance and may leave too little room for Windows updates.

Review Windows cleanup suggestions
In Settings > System > Storage, open Cleanup recommendations if it is available. Review the categories and select only files or apps you are comfortable removing. You can also use Storage Sense to manage eligible temporary files, or search for Disk Cleanup—particularly useful on Windows 10 systems where other cleanup options may differ. Microsoft explains these options in its guide to freeing drive space.
- Previous Windows installation files: deleting them can remove the option to go back to the earlier Windows version.
- Downloads: check the folder yourself before deleting anything; it may contain files you still need.
- Cloud files: review how the cleanup choice interacts with OneDrive or another cloud provider and your sync settings.
With its default configuration, Storage Sense can remove selected temporary content and items in the Recycle Bin after a period; it does not touch Downloads or cloud-provider content unless you configure it to. It manages the system drive, so other drives need separate attention.

Move files you want to keep
If photos, videos, or other personal files are taking up space, move them to an external USB drive or SD card. This can make room on the system drive, including for some Windows updates, but moving files is a way to free space—not a direct speed upgrade. Microsoft describes external storage as an option in its Windows update storage guidance.
4. Let Windows optimize the drive
Windows usually optimizes drives automatically, weekly by default. The operation depends on the drive: HDDs are defragmented, while SSDs are trimmed. To check the status, search Windows for Defragment and Optimize Drives. Microsoft explains the distinction and schedule in its guide to optimizing data drives. Avoid running third-party defragmentation tools or applying HDD advice indiscriminately to an SSD.

5. Check the laptop model before considering an upgrade
If the laptop is still slow after basic checks, its hardware may be the limiting factor. Microsoft says storage labeled HDD is typically slower to use than SSD or eMMC storage. That comparison supports considering an SSD only if the specific laptop supports a compatible, replaceable drive; many budget laptops use eMMC or have components that are not intended to be replaced.
Before buying a part, find the exact model number and check the manufacturer’s specifications or upgrade documentation for storage type, replaceability, interface, form factor, capacity limits, and warranty implications. Back up the existing drive before any replacement. Whether an upgrade is worthwhile also depends on other components, such as the processor and memory; the model and bottleneck must be known before choosing parts. Microsoft notes that for older PCs with outdated hardware, upgrading may be the best long-term solution.

6. Reset Windows only if problems persist
If the laptop remains unusually slow or unstable after the earlier checks, Windows recovery is a later option—not the first cleanup step. Reset choices vary: some keep personal files but remove apps and settings, while others remove more. Back up important files before starting, because recovery options can cause data loss.
