Start by adjusting the headset rather than stretching or forcing it. Position the earcups so their cushions sit properly over or around your ears, then set the headband to rest gently on your head. If discomfort persists, identify whether it comes from the headband, earcups, temples, or glasses before considering compatible replacement cushions or a different fit.

Adjust the fit before changing anything

  1. Set the sliders: Extend or retract each side until the earcups align comfortably with your ears. Avoid pulling hard or twisting the headset while adjusting it.
  2. Position the earcups: Place the cushions over or around your ears as intended for the headset. On-ear pads rest on the ears; over-ear pads should surround them without folding them uncomfortably.
  3. Settle the headband: Adjust it so it rests gently rather than pressing sharply on one spot. Sony’s fit guidance is to “Adjust the slider so the headband softly touches the top of your head.” Sony’s headphone-fit guidance also advises against excessive force or twisting.

Find where the pressure is coming from

Notice what feels uncomfortable and when it starts. A sore spot on top of your head points to headband contact; pinching or heat around the ears points to the cushions or earcup position; pressure at the temples may involve the headset arms or glasses. Change one adjustment at a time so you can tell whether it helps.

  • Headband pressure: Revisit the slider setting and headband position. If pressure remains despite a gentle fit, the headset’s shape or adjustment range may not suit you.
  • Ear or cushion pressure: Check that the pads are positioned correctly and are not folding your ears. If the manufacturer offers alternate cushions or padding, check that they fit your exact headset model and attachment method before buying.
  • Temple pressure with glasses: Adjust the headset position or your frames to reduce the contact point. RØDE’s guidance also suggests removing glasses if possible, but that is not practical for everyone. Its advice is specific to the NTH-50, so do not assume its adjustment details apply to every headset.

Try compatible cushions, not a universal replacement

Replacement headphone ear pads may help when the original cushions cause discomfort, but pads are not universal. Sennheiser recommends trying different cushions or padding when options are available. Confirm the headset’s exact model and how its pads attach; a cushion that looks similar may not fit securely or preserve the intended position.

Use a cautious break-in approach

Sennheiser suggests wearing headphones for short periods over several days as a gradual break-in approach. Treat that as a manufacturer suggestion, not a guarantee that a tight or painful headset will become comfortable.

Do not stretch the headband as a routine fix. Sennheiser warns that stretching can crack or permanently damage it and may affect the warranty. RØDE likewise cautions that stretching can damage the NTH-50 headband. If the headset remains uncomfortably tight, check the manufacturer’s support and warranty terms instead of applying force.

Take a pause when discomfort builds

There is no established, research-backed break interval for long headset sessions in the cited manufacturer guidance. Use increasing discomfort or irritation as a practical cue to reposition the headset or take it off for a while. Stop wearing it if pain or irritation continues rather than trying to push through it.

When adjustment is not enough

If careful positioning and any compatible cushion options do not resolve the pressure, the headset’s fit or wearing style may not suit you. There is no established universally most comfortable headset design. When comparing alternatives, assess whether the model is on-ear or over-ear, how much cushion coverage and depth it provides, its headband adjustment range, how it fits with your glasses, its weight, and the seller’s return policy. These are fit criteria to check for yourself, not results from a comparative comfort test.

The guidance above draws on manufacturer support instructions from Sennheiser Hearing (updated April 6, 2026), Sony USA (modified December 14, 2025), and RØDE (updated June 23, 2025). These instructions are not independent comfort testing or medical advice.
